I just bought a 351 C for $25. Stock 2 bbl carb and intake still intact. Its all in good shape still. Did I do good???
If so, I plan on rebuilding it and boring it out and gettin a few extra HP out of it....maybe around 250 HP.
Anyone here get good results with their rebuilds??
I have an 83 Full size Bronco with a 300 6 cyl 1 bbl, 4 spd trans.
Its ALL comin out and the 351C 4bbl with a C6 is goin in.
Any suggestions (preferrably GOOD ones) are greatly appreciated !!!
Believe me, you are sure to get more than 250 horses out of that thing, even with an extremely mild cam and rebuild. Search this forum, that's what I have done. I can spend a couple of hours reading through the information in here. $25 is a good deal, assuming nothing major is wrong with it, even then...... only $25.
It's a bit of a controversial subject, but the general consensus around here is that a 351C is not the right choice for a truck engine. It lacks low end torque, and the natural ability of a 351M to upgrade to a 400 just by bolting in parts. The 300 you already have will probably out pull it.
I heard that years ago the general consensus was that the earth is flat. The general consensus in the nation is that Chevies are better than Fords and I don't buy that one either.
I have been running a 351c in my F-250 since about 1990. Previous to that I ran both a 390 and a 400. If the 351c lacks low end torque, that is news to me. I towed a 6000 lb. trailer from Minnesota to California 4 years ago and it did just fine. I would like to see the 300 six that will out pull it.
I am running a RV type cam from PAW and a Carter AFB. I used the dished KB pistons and zero deck, which yielded a CR of 8.3. I don't have any trouble keeping up with traffic!
That is a good deal. The heads alone will bring more than $25.00. A stock 351C-2V will surely outperform a 300 I6 in all aspects except for maybe very low speed grunt and groan work. In a Bronco with the proper upgrades it will be great. Don't build too much compression or use too much cam. 67F250 seems to have a good combo.
The only thing to remember is that there is a reason you got it for only 25 bucks. The reason may have nothing to do with the quality of the engine, but it may have everything to do with it. I would make sure the machine shop checks for any new weld work on the engine. I had a buddy who could weld cracked heads and blocks to where you couldn't visually tell where the crack was.
That's an excellent buy - one I'd make over and over. I just got a Cleveland long block free from a friend and it made my day. You can easily get 250 hp out of it, and the notion that Clevelands have no low end torque typically comes from either someone who's only read Chevy-biased magazines, or had one with crappy gearing or a poorly built engine. Most I've seen, even the 4V head versions, have had great low-end.
I agree with Tulsa. A friend of mine had a 351C in a 77' f-150, even with all of the smog equipment and a 2 bbl, it was a monster on the low end. It had to be the healthiest truck in our group.
