Mp3
New 2004 F150 Lariat with 6 disk in dash cd player is, according to manual and other literature should be able to paly MP3 files however, even files reduced from a bit rate of 64kbps to 16kbps won't play. Display reads "CD-Rom" then player ejects the disk. Anyone have an answer as to why this is happening?

"CD units are designed to play commercially pressed 12 cm (4.75 in)
audio compact discs only. Due to technical incompatibility, certain
recordable and re-recordable compact discs may not function
correctly when used in Ford CD players. Irregular shaped CDs,
CDs with a scratch protection film attached, and CDs with
homemade paper (adhesive) labels should not be inserted into
the CD player. The label may peel and cause the CD to become
jammed. It is recommended that homemade CDs be identified
with permanent felt tip marker rather than adhesive labels. Ball
point pens may damage CDs. Please contact your dealer for
further information."
I know you said you read the manual and it said it could play MP3s, but this came right out of the manual (audiophile system) on page 31.
Looks like we're out of luck playing MP3s, maybe even CDRs. I haven't tried a home-made music CD yet.

Quite simply, there are only a couple of audience-targetted vehicles on the market wherein the head unit will play actual .MP3 files. Our truck is not one of those vehicles. You can play CD-R and CD-RW discs with .WAV files burned on them ... but not MP3 files. For that, you'll probably have to replace your head unit with an aftermarket one that plays MP3s.

I'm curious what your response from Ford was.
The head units are the same, in fact if you look at the one installed (Audiophile) it actually says MP3. My understanding is that is is a software upgrade, nothing hardware related. I'll wait for the 05 to come out, go to ford complain that the quick reference says it works, and I want it to and see if they will run the software upgrade on it.

I just got my 2004 Lariat Screw 2 days ago and was surprised to read in the Quick Ref manual that the Audiophile 6 Disc does indeed play mp3s. Of course, in practice, just like the owner who started this thread, the deck spit out the disc displaying "CD ROM DISC."
The original post was made on 3/19/2004. My Quick Ref Guide is dated as April 2004. Interesting that there was enough information Ford wanted to change/update, but the mp3 info remained.
I, too, hope it is just a software update.

Count me in too. Just got my 2004 screw lariat with premium/audiophile in-dash cd6/mp3 pioneer audio system. Quick guide says it will play mp3, however I get the same result with player saying "cd rom disc" and then it kicks it out. I tried burning on CDR's and CD-RW's. They play okay on my computer and portable player. Does anyone have any advice? Does anyone know exactly what Pioneer model we have? I would like to do some web research.

I'm not trying to start a thread war, it just seems that this is more than just a typo. If it is a typo, why is Ford still allowing this literature to be distributed to new truck owners? Ford must know that this is a typo or they know the Audiophile's are not doing what Ford's lit states it can do. Why continue to hand out information on the quick "how-tos" of your new $40K truck if it was several months old and, most importantly, incorrect?

If Ford felt there was information in the previous version of the Quick Ref guide that it needed to be revised in April 2004, then why didn't they remove this information regarding the MP3 capabilities of the 6-disc head unit if it's not correct?
Like someone else said earlier, I'll wait until the 2005 models are out. Then I'll make a stink about the problem to the dealer. Maybe I can get then to replace the HU with the newer model.
Then again, I might have the 7015 by then.

No MP3 in 2004
I have a 2004 F-150 brochure and a MP3 radio is not offered on any model. The 2003 STX could be ordered with an MP3 radio and the 2005 models can also be ordered with it. I tried to get my dealer to swap a 2005 MP3 radio on my 2004 Screw but was told that the wiring harness would not work. I got an aftermarket Kenwood. I can get about 200 songs on one disc.
The quick reference must be in error, Your radio will play MP3's but your burning software has to convert the songs into a regular cd which usually only holds about 20 songs. Also you will not get the song title or artist name to come up on the display, like on some radio stations. If you want that you need a MP3 radio, then you can burn your CD without converting the songs. Also I had to reencode all of my MP3 into version ID3v2 because not all my songs would display title and artist while playing.
