My 04 FX4 Screw has the regular single cd player and plays all my home-rolled mp3`s.I notice that some don`t sound as good as they do at home, but for the most part, they play fine.
I just bought an F-150 Screw Lariat during lunch today. It has the Audiophile system and MP3 capability. Before I bought it, I took an MP3 CD that I made and put it in. It played fine. I turned the truck and radio off, went inside and signed for it. As I drove back to work, I tried to play the MP3 and it just sat there thinking until it spit it out and said "BAD CD."
WTF?
I'm going to go back soon to pick up my bed liner, so I'll mention it when I go back. I'll play with it some to see what I can do until then...
Congratulations! I think I know what happened. While you were signing the papers for it they switched your unit with an old style 04.Anyway,I am sure they will take care of it.Keep us posted and have fun with it.
IMO i think the Ford 6 disk changer are nothing but a piece of junk. It may play your cd's good for awhile and then they either start skipping or jamming your cd inside. I took my out stock HU about a week after i'd bought my truck and replaced it with a newer HU that plays mp3 without any problems. And also changed all my stock speaker with components in the front and a good decent 6x8 infinity speakers. . Now i can play either mp3 on my cd's or hook up my 40 gig mp3 player for the long drives

Actually, I tried out the CD player this morning. It reads and plays manufactured discs just fine, but it won't read a homemade disc copied straight from a store bought one! It's not just the MP3, but any homemade discs. I haven't tried different disc brands to see if there is a compatibility issue. I know that is an issue with homemade CD's and some CD players.
I played an audio CD burned to a 74 minute CD this morning and it worked perfectly! I bought some more 74 minute CD's to make MP3's with. I'll do that tonight. BTW, almost no one sells 74 anymore. I found a 25 pack at CompUSA, and it was the cheapo CompUSA brand. Even if this works, I'm going to complain about buying a 36,000 truck that has 5 year old technology for an audio system...
Part of me wants to use this as an excuse to buy a double DIN touch screen DVD/CD/MP3/WMA/Aux/etc., but I like the clean look of the stock HU. Does anyone know if the Kenwood music keg will plug into the Aux input in the stock unit? I'm thinking of eliminating the need for any CD's altogether, and still keep the stock HU.
I ran across another quirk with the 6 cd changer in 2004's. On a long road trip recently, I stopped and bought a couple of commercial "books on cd" cd's. None of them would play! And of course I didn't try to play them until I was 500 miles away from where I purchased them, so I guess I'll add them to the garage sale. I stuck them into my computer and they play'd just fine. I noticed they were recorded in the .wav file format.
Surprisingly enough, I posted this question on their website and got an answer. More than I can say for the many number of calls into Ford Customer Service or my dealer. When it comes down to it, dealers and the people answering the phones don't know anything about specifics of the vehicles. FCS wouldn't help me if I didn't have a VIN either. That's terrible customer service when I want to ask a general question that applies to any VIN. I'm having the dealer replace in this Friday.
