I am looking at purchasing an M5OD for my '70 F100 w/ 302 4x2.
Any word on the reliability of these trannys? How much hp/torque can these trannys handle? My 302 is slated for some performance later in life and I want to be sure this tranny can handle it.
Thanks Scott.
The m5od is a light duty trans... It has been known to die behind stock 302s(my cousin's truck killed 2)... I would look into a built t-5.. ( Assuming it's a street struck)
I have seen the 4X2 ZF trans sell for $200 and up and this was for a small block ford.
Today I picked up an M5OD for $25 at the junk yard. I know the tranny is good because the truck had a cab fire. I haven't found any ZF's in the yard yet.
If it is a boat anchor then I am stuck with a 25$ one. Maybe this will be a good trans to tear apart and learn how to rebuild before I give it to my father?
I sure wish it was that easy to find the 5sp tranny here in florida i blew mine and the local yards arnt willing to part with them for what i thought was a reasonable price so my truck is sitting till i can find a cheap tranny..
I am pretty lucky in that I have known the owner of the junkyard for a long time. He is also only in it for the scrap metal. He's not in the junkyard business of selling parts buy does, if he has what you need. I watched hime scrap a few 4X4 trucks of old a new models. I just can't buy it all. I would have a yard full of stuff.
