I got a 2003 FX4 5.4L and I was think about putting on dual exhaust, and flowmaster has a good system. It includes a 50 series suv/truck muffler, bent pipe a tips. for $300. What do you think and did anyone have this system install on there truck
Same here!! I've got the exact same truck and was thinking about buying this same catback system for it. Can anyone tell us about the sound of this system. I tow a boat frequently so I don't want anything that is too annoying in the cab. Any info. will be helpful; power gains/loss, MPG gains/loss, etc. Flowmaster says they dyno these systems specifically for the application but I still would like to hear from someone that is using this system. Thanks.
I just put one on my dad's 2003 F-150 with the 5.4L.....It was the flowmaster force II set up. His tail pipes exit out the rear. It was fairly easy to do. Took about 2 hrs. It sounds tame at idle....a nice rumble at cruising speeds.....and it roars pretty good when he gets on it. The only problem is Massachusetts just made it illegal to have a system that is louder than stock......so he might get to enjoy it for only a month before he has to get it inspected and fail the inspection and have to take it off. But it does sound good for now. I have a V10 and was going to have a custom system made for my truck.....but guess not because it is now illegal to sell and install such a system....I LOVE LIVING IN THE LAND OF LIBERALS
Thanks for the reply. That really sucks about the new law there, especially after putting hard-earned money in a new exhaust system. I was wandering if you could get some more info. from your Dad. I really would like to know about performance gains/loss, MPG gains/loss, and sound inside the cab. I don't want an exhaust system that will drive me crazy while towing on those long fishing trips. Anything would be helpful.
BTW-I had the same muffler (50 series SUV) that comes with this system on a 1986 F150 w/302. It sounded great on that truck but it didn't have any cats and I hardly ever towed with it. I guess I'm answering my own question here but I just want something to compare with.
One more thing, did you have to remove the spare tire when you installed the system?

The 50 is pretty tame. I had the same setup but I took the 50 out and slipped in a 40 orig. that brought the exhaust note up a bit. My Expy is only a 4.6 and it is almost as loud as my other truck w/headers, no cats, and true duals.
My buddy had that setup on his '01 F150 w/4.6l and I really liked it. A nice bark when started up, a burbly idle and just barely audible when cruising around. It was only really noticeable in the cab when accellerating and it sounded great, not the least bit overbearing. Not sure about the performance increase though, I never drove it when it was stock.
kyfordman......that truck is his toy...he never drives it....I mean that.....it is almost a year old 2k miles on it!!!!!!!!!!!! So performance or MPG increase...have no idea.....the spare tire doesn't need to be romove.....but it make it a whole lot easier to take it down while installing the system....the clearance tollerance is 3/4 of a inch....you just barely get that between the spare and the shock boots.....they also give you a tie back for the differential vent tube......It is a pretty good system
As of April 1, 2004....It is now illegal to own, sell, or install any exhaust system louder than stock in the state of Massachusetts.......watch out guys you state could be next.
That really blows!! I don't want to turn this board into a political forum, but something has to be done about all of the wierd legislation being passed these days. Little by little most of our freedom, and will to choose is being taken away from us. It's hard to fathom that something as trivial as a louder than stock muffler being illegal. I really think these legislators need to spend more time on improving homeland security, than worrying about loud exhaust. I guess all of us need to pay closer attention to what type of legislation is trying to be passed, and try to fight it before it actually comes to fruition. I'm wondering how long before other states follow Massachusetts lead.
Sorry I had to vent !!
Great topic though! Either this week or next, I am putting the Flowmaster 17222 kit on my '03 F150 Supercrew Off Road 4X4, and I got some good info from this post>
