I hope this question has not allready been addressed.if so sorry for the
redundancy,Anyway my question is my check oil light came on
and it lasted only for a few minutes. So I stoped there is plenty of
oil still fairly clean as oil goes,no funny noise.A small drop in oil pressure but in normal range still.I do have a small gasket leak in the oil pan which I plan on doing in the spring. But with this I may need to replace the oil pump ssssooooooooo might as well change the gasket if I have to go that far.I am thinking though it maybe the oil level sensor .? any ideas.I did run the car for a few minutes and the light did not come on..But before anything happens like a blown engine I would like some imput.
thank you its a ford areostar 1989 xl eddy bower 93 thousand miles.
Well, if your check oil light came on it means you have low oil. But you said it was good. So, you must have a bad sensor. It is located on the side of the oil pan I believe. Just keep an eye on you oil level and make sure there is no ticking. Maybe just replace the sensor when you do the oil pan gasket. You could also check your connection as well. It may be corroded giving you a bad reading. Good luck!
On my old 90 the check oil light was very sensitive. The level seemd fine. Add a little and the light went out.
Usually it only showed up after using the van then stopping and restarting after a few minutes. If it set longer it didn't come on at all. Of course we got in the habit of adding a half pint to a pint each time so the light wouldn't come on again anyway. I just think the light is a little touchy. Add a little and see if it goes away.
By the way, the oil pressure gague is not a real pressure level. It is an idiot light turned into a gague. It either reads OK or Zero. Don't go on a small change in the needle position. Mine always reads just over half. Engine speed doesn't not affect the reading at all. Not is not realistic. Just wanted to add that.

I agree with tom_foreman, my 90 3.0L light will come on at startup if for instance it is cold and I start the van to move it, shut it off and then restart. The cold oil doesn't flow back into the pan very quickly. Also if it is starting to get low and I part on a slant it will come on. Consider it an early warning system, if you are parked on a flat surface and the van has been sitting for awhile and the light comes on at startup then you need to add 1Qt.
Also very important: make sure your light comes on when you crank the engine. You do not want the bulb to burn out.
