how should i go about taking out the ciggareete lighter in my 97 f150? i am going to be putting a switch in thei to power my amp. the instructions of the amp say i should run a power wire directly to the battery, and have a in-line fuse in that wire. If I run this wire first to the switch im putting in place of the cigarette lighter will it still work. And should i replace the fuse for the cigarette lighter to handel the amp, or should i run an in-line fuse, or both?
The only reason I can see to use the cigarette lighter location, is for the physical placement of the switch. You cannot use the power wire to the cigarette lighter, because if you have a large amp, the lighter power is not big enough.
Most of the amps I've seen, will run a very large wire from the battery + or the starter relay battery post, to a special large fuse nearby on the fender. Then you run the heavy wire back to the amp and hook it directly up.
The amp should have a smaller wire that is used to trigger the amp to turn on and off. You do not use a switch in the big power wire.
The smaller trigger wire is usually hooked to the power antenna wire of the radio. The trigger wire for the amp will have a built-in delay before it brings the speakers online. This will let the voltage spikes and such settle down before the speakers come on to prevent loud "pops" and "thumps" from damaging the speakers.
You could still use a small switch hooked to 12 volts, and then hook this to the small trigger wire for the amp. It will not take much current to feed the trigger wire. I would just make sure you turn this switch on last when you power everything up.
