I have the mitsubishi starter on my truck. I wanted to take it apart and check things out since it has some strange cranking problems. I also think that the alternator is getting weak. Who has kit's to rebuild these things? How many amps does the alt put out on an 87 6.9?
Any suggestions on upgrades to the alternator or starter?
Thanks
P.S. It has new batteries/heavy 2-0 cables and good connections all around. So all the basics have been covered. Now it's down to pulling parts and inspecting. Truck has almost 400K miles on it, so there's no telling what I'll find.
well i cant really answewr yar question other then i got a reman starter from autozone for 150 dollars best part is the starter is garented for life. i was just wondering ya say ya have 400,000 miles has any work been done to the negein and does it have a turbo. reason i ask is mine is getting on near 280,000 and id like to turbo her but i need it to last for a bit longer before i do a rebuild so i was wondering what the durabilty was. thanks
What alternator do you have? I have the big motocraft old style. They are usually around 100 amps. To find parts for the starter you'll probably have to find a rebuilder somewhere near you.
I have the 100 amp Motorcraft alternator on my '89. I took it apart to put in bearings & brushes only to find the armature windings burned white. I read on the back of a rebuild kit that these alternators are prone to winding failure. After that I popped the $120 for a lifetime warranty rebuilt.
Thanks for the help. I'm the third owner, so the history of the truck is sketchy at best. The last owner told me that he rebuilt the engine with rings and bearings about 40K miles back. It has a rebuilt transfercase and a few new parts showing here and there. For the most part everything on it shows a lot of age and miles, but not abuse. That's the good part. The bad part is that there are a lot of original motorcraft parts on the truck, including the top radiator hose and the heater hoses. That would tend to tell me that p.m. wasn't real high on the list. I'm thinking that they only fixed it when it blew up or broke. Which shows a lot for the durability of the original parts.
Stay with the Mitsubishi gear reduction starter. I have seen three different styles, but they are all good starters. The oldest style will have you talking to yourself trying to get the bolts out, probably in strange languages. The latest style is a piece of cake to remove and install.
The local starter rebuild shop could not get any parts to rebuild one though. NAPA has Mitsubishi starters for about 200 exchange though.
As far as my alternator I am running a 130 Amp from Advance Auto. Lifetime guarantee for around 150 dollars exchange.
