I have the v10 in my f350 crewcab 4x4 with automatic and 373 rearend. I get 11 miles on the hiway empty and get 7.5 when towing my 26ft Weekend Warrior toyhouse 8700lb when loaded to Glamis from San Diego going through mountains and flat lands. hope this helps, but if you want good gas mileage buy a Ranger 4 banger.
I've had a 92 Dodge Dakota ExtraCab with the 5.2 Magnum V8 for eight years now. I'm over the short bed, 1/2 ton thing, it's lame (can't even put a MX bike or a 4X8 sheet of plywood in the back and close the tailgate). Rangers are tinker toys. The 5.2 tows the boat and the gear for the river - O.K. only; at times I realy want more. I get about 11MPH loaded and towing and 15-17 unloaded and not towing. I'm just trying to figure out how much milage I'm going to have to give up to step up to the big rig, because I do use the truck a lot around town just haul'in stuff, this and that and milage is of some concern. Just trying to get a feel for what I'm getting into before I plop down $30,000.00
Thanks for getting back to me. I was begining to think that 5.4, 2WD Super-Duties didn't exist. Your numbers seem encouraging. I'm so close to stepping up this just might push me over. I wan't one bad. Another guy gave me some numbers on a V10 that were almost as good as yours. His theory is that a 5500lbs truck needs lots of power just to move it. The V10 has it and does'nt have to work that hard. On the other hand the 5.4 needs to work (wider throtle opening - less vacuume)and therefore sucks up the gas just as bad. Could be, makes some sence.
I have a 99.5 F250 SD Supercab 4x4 V10. Average about 12-13 in town and 14-15 on the highway. Mileage increased ahbout 2 mpg after about 10,000-15,000 miles. Best I have ever gotten was 15.7.
I have a friend that has a 2000 F250 SD Supercab 4x4 with the 5.4l auto and the best he can get is 12 mpg. Also have another friend with a 2000 crew cab 5.4l manual. His best mileage has been 13mpg. Both are very sorry they did not get the V10.
Not saying there is anything wrong with the 5.4, just my personal experience.
I had a 1992 F-250 and got the 351 instead of the 460 to get better gas mileage. My gas mileage around town was a little bit better than people with 460's, but it was terrible anytime I hooked something up behind it. I just ordered a 2001 and won't make the same mistake I am getting the V-10. I drove an expedition with the 5.4l the other day and it seemed underpowered. That's just my 2 cents
GOOD LUCK
The 5.4L has more than enough engine to pull the truck.. If your going to be doing heavy towing often, then the V10 or PSD would be the way to go.
If not towing, the 5.4L always gets better mileage then the equivalent truck with the V10.
Granted, the mpg difference isn't always huge, but there is a difference.
I have a 2000 F-250, 4X4, extended cab, long bed, 4:10 LS, 5.4L engine. I get about 15 on the highway without load, 13 or 14 in city. I only have 7000 miles and expect better mileage after time. I would go with the V-10 if you are going to haul all the time, otherwise I would do the 5.4. I Like it. Kevin
The bottom line on gas mileage is that these trucks are not made to go 75 - 80 MPG although they easily do it! They cut through the air like a butter knife through Elk hide! I just made a 1300 mile trip from Montana to Seattle and at 78mph, got 12.0 MPG all the way! ( 00 v-10 Auto 4x4 3.73 CC F250 )
But, if I drive to West Yellowstone through the canyon and back, I will get 17mpg every time! I average probably 60mph on that trip. I've done some checking with the trip computer too. Get on a flat stretch of higway and set your cruise to different speeds and reset the computer ( if you have the lariat package ) You will notice a huge difference between 60, 65, 70, and 80!
By the way, when was the last time you saw someones mileage actually improve with time and miles?? My experience has been the opposite. The first trip to Seattle averaged 14mpg when the truck was new. Now it's a good honest 12!
The last post on Gas Mileage was really right on! Just what I've been preaching for so long. I drive my Y2k F250SD 4x4 V-10 5 speed with 3.73's with a vaccum guage instead of a Speedometer / Tachometer and average 14 mpg with highs around 17. Only modification so far is the K&N Filter Charger....as cool air and more of it means more power and better breathing for those 10 cylinders.
Again the last Post was the ticket to better mileage. If you don't believe it get a vaccum guage and drive by it.
FWIW. I have less than 900 miles on my '00 F-250 SD extended cab, shortbed, 4x4, 5.4L, 4.10 LS and the weight of the off-road pack and camper pack. My only true full tank of combined driving came out at 12.35mpg. I have to say much of this was freeway at about 65-70. I've added a Bedrug but nothing to streamline the box.
I find the truck has ample power for all conditions. I've pulled a 3 ton capacity utility trailer(empty except for 10 gal gas and 10 gal water) and it hardly phased the truck.
Don't know how or why but I'm hoping for better mileage later on. I do intend to use synth oil at 1000 miles and for the life of the truck- that may help. I used it on my '92 Explorer and sold it with full power, no leaks, and 130,000 miles.

Bob

I'm an example of the worst possible gas mileage driving conditions. My 5.6 mile commute to work has 7 stop signs and 11 traffic lights, all on hilly terrain. Some days I only drive 1 mile each way to pick up my son from daycare. On top of all that, I love to feel the power of that V10 by putting my foot into it. My mileage is 8.5 mpg around town. I used to get almost 10 mpg on my fuel injected 302 F150 with manual, short box, regular cab. Now I have a much more capable truck and the mileage isn't much worse. Only 5000 miles on it so far, so it's still being broke in. My first tank was 7.5 mpg.
I have a 2000 F-350 V10 5spd 4.30 Ext Cab Short bed with about 4000 miles on it. So far, I drive about 20 miles to work (mixed city/highway) and I get right around 12 mpg. I recently towed a car trailer and '65 Mustang up into the mountains(Colorado) for a car show, and also got between 11-12 mpg. I have been known to have a "lead foot", yet the mileage always stays between 11-12 mpg.
