I am interested in purchasing some sort of bed cover for my new F250 short bed?
I have seen Retractable Hard Tonneau Covers, but dont know much about them.
Anybody out there that can shed some information (pros-cons, maintenance, brand name, etc. would greatly be appreciated.
I have had a BedLocker in my truck for three years. I opted for the motorized unit and have been extremely satisfied with the overall quality - fit, durability, customer support. About a year ago the plastic gears that roll the cover back and forth broke - one call to BedLocker and they shipped a replacement set free of charge, took me 25 minutes to change them out.
Plusses: Security, ease of use, don't have to remove the cover if I want to haul firewood or a washing machine.
Negative: Spendy ($1200 installed) and the powdercoat has faded badly since it is parked outside (won't fit in the garage) under a blistering Arizona sun
A new blanket costs $475.00, I am getting estimates to have the blanket stripped and hard anodized - it is pretty unsightly.
Other than the powder coat, I'd buy one for my next truck
Have you considered any of the folding covers? I have an Advance cover, and I am quite happy with it. It is not that expensive ($600 or so incl shipping) and works quite well. My father has had a couple of these covers and has also had good luck. They look decent, as well.
I had a roll back but I wound up selling it. It took up about 12" of space behind the cab where it rolled up. It also sticks into the bed about 2" down the rails. They're nice in theory, but I like to put Harley's and snowmobiles etc back there. It just wound up taking up too much room. I put a tilt cover on that I can unsnap if I need to. Much better for me. I suppose it's all in what you'll use it for.
LT1Z2ave is correct about the roll ups taking up room. I had the Rollandlock on my F-150. I put a hard fiberglass cover on my F250 and have been happy with it.
I have been looking for the best cover and this is the one. I got two of them for my truck and my son. If you go to and dealer you will pay 3500.00 to 375.00 for them http://www.truckxpressions.com/truck...s/extangrt.htm

I have had a Peragon cover on mine for about a month now. So far , so good. Even a high pressure car wash only results in a few drops of water in the back. It also removes completly in less than 1 minute.
The top is hard black (gloss) Lexon (the stuff they make aircraft windshields out of). It is one piece with ball bearing rollers and aluminum under the lexon. It has a key lock for when you have it all the way closed. Provides pretty good security. In addition, you can lock the cover anywhere along the track. Great for when you have a 5th wheel attached. Just lock the cover just before the hitch. Everything forward of the 5th wheel stays dry.
When you roll up the cover, it rolls up in a tub and stays within a drum that does not let any part of the cover touch itself.
I had mine on my red 2001 PSD. Loved it so much, I took it off and installed it on my new 2004 King Ranch. It attaches to the top of the bed rails with clamps - so no drilling into the bed or frame.
if you get the roll up hard cover get the one's with the vynle over the metal. but again they are salty, i opted for the sportmaster soft cover in gray, easy on and off.
I'd like to add a rollup cover but think I am pretty well nixed on that due to the fact I have a mounted Weather Guard check in the back already. While it doesn't stick up above the rail, it isn't much below it either. Every rollup that I've seen appears to need room to at least the botton of the rail to mount and some extra room near the cab to store the door stored. I think the chest would preclude that.
I've got a lousy picture of it in my gallery (took in pitch black dark condition).
I don't need easy access to the chest all the time, just the ability to get there if necessary for tools and some stored stuff.
I think I would be stuck with a solid cover type, and the ones I like are the ones the most expensive. snugtop for example.
I'm just not sure if a snap top would be what I would like.
I can imaging the less drag on the MPG could have that a top will provide.
I have an Advance Cover that seems to work good for me.
The section behind the cab opens, and the section at the tailgate
opens, or I can fold it up behind the cab and have access to the
goose neck ball or haul taller items in the bed without taking it off.
Hey Guys,
Thanks for all the info. Now I can research and decide what I want to get.
Cheif, does the Retrax flap or viberate at highway speed? It really looks like it built well.
Rick, same question on the roll up you suggested.
