88 f150 ignition or electrical problem

88 f150 ignition or electrical problem
ford f150 1988
started a couple of weeks ago. when i turn my key to power i get a ticking sould in one of the relays under the hood. when i continue to try and start it, everything goes dead. my starter doesn't turn over and the solenoid doesn't make a ticking sound.
my lights work fine and i have power until i turn the key on. Then my lights will go dim and my battery will start to heat on the posative post. eventually killing my batterry. I wonder if i have a short some where and am grounding out or if this is somthing different?
Becouse now the truck wont start at all.
