Question A/C Airconditioning not working

Hey guys,
Its starting to get hot now as many of you already know and having A/C is very important on a 98 degree day. It used to work before winter. now all thats blowing is regular air. The air blender still works for it will blow hot air if I put it on hot.
I have a 98 Explorer XLT with a 4.0 SOHC.

Is there any steps I could check?

I bought this truck so that I wouldnt have to deal with the heat!

Can you hear the compressor kick on when you switch to A/C? If not, could be the freon has leaked down to where it has insufficient pressure for the cycling switch to engage the compressor.

how does that sound like? because I might confuse it from the blower sound.

Sounds like it is low on freon, the clutch cycling fast is the indicator. Listen for something like a snap or click when you turn on the a/c it will probably cycle rather fast if low. Otherwise open the hood and look at the compressor while the engine is running and the a/c is on you should see the compressor kick in. Watch the pulley and you will see it work.

Ok. guys I checked it out this morning. the compressor works ( I guess because it makes a low hissing sound when i switch it to ac).
How can I refill the freon if thats the problem? is it easy to do? I know theres some refill kits available at kragen or pep boys. are they pretty easy to use?

yea its real ez to do, theres a few differant ways to tell if its full, one is, with the gauge if you deciede to get a kit that has the gauge the other is feel the low side pipe, it should be cold, its located above the coke can like piece, which you will find on the passenger side with a fitting on top, that is were you want to charge the low side, its right by the fan motor for the heat and ac,, with the engine running and ac on high and set to max ac, you can start to fill it up, the compressor will suck the freon out of the can, if you have a gauge you want it to read between 25-30 psi with the compressor on, if its cold out it will be a little less, but ideal temp is 70 but you can do it if its colder.

Ok guys. I got the refill kit and refilled it according to the instructions. However it doesn't seem to have worked.

here are the current conditions:
1. Temp right now is 58 degrees.
2. Compressor works. it takes about 10 seconds or so before it decompresses.
3. Before refilling the gauge read 0 psi.
4. After refilling, the gauge slowly rises from 25 to about 45 and then decompresses again (thats when I hear a clicking sound).
5. The max ac and regular ac is a little colder than regular air blower.

I'm trying to read the haynes manual but theres nothing on it regarding troubleshooting.

lemme know your inputs. thanks
Lino

Sounds like you still do not have enough freon to keep compressor from cycling on/ off.
Takes around 3 cans to completely fill a system from scratch.
My guess you have a major leak in the system to get original pressures down to zero. Suggest you start looking for the leak. Suspect dash coil, flex hose sections or "O" rings at coupling joints. Search for signs of oily residue and most likely, that is where leak is.

Oh yea i forgot to add that I didnt even use the whole can. I bought a 19 oz can with the gauge on the cap where u press the cap to release the freon.

I stopped filling (pressing the cap) once the gauge read 40. because I dont want to overfill.
Should have I used up the whole can?

I looked everywhere and I can't see any oil residue on the hoses. just on the can, if you call it residue.. the can is rusty. maybe its just from normal wear and tear.

no no no the commpress will have to cycle in that temp because the system does not have enough heat to take out and the freon when compressed lowers pressure and no heat = LOW PRESSURE the pressure u should read on the low side of the system when the compressor is runing should be at 25-30psi when the system is off it should be at like 40 or someware in thier hope this helps

so what do i do? the instructions on the can states to let the car idle. put on the ac to max and read the gauge. it said to stop before it goes to the yellow range which is 45-50. should I disregard it and empty the whole can?

or should I do this after the car is very warm

The low pressure switch will cut off the compressor at around 25 PSI or below. That is the clicking sound you hear as the pressure falls off. Fill the system, with the compressor running, till the gague reads between 35-45 PSI steady WITH THE COMPRESSOR RUNNING. Pressure with the compressor off (steady state) will run in the 60-70 (or slightly higher) PSI range on a full system. A full charge to an empty system takes around 35 ounces of freon (3 12oz cans)
