i have a totally stock 68 f100 360 i just ordered the pertronix part #pnx1281 from summit, the cheaper one, i am using stock coil, do i need to worry about that ballast resistor wire, and i am running plain old autolites gap at 35 do i need to change that. i am looking more for reliability than anything, i dont want to alter wires if i dont have to. can i put this unit directly in regap the plugs and be on my way. thats what i am looking for. thanks for all the help. i have been messing with points, dwell, gap, timming for two days now. thanks for all the info in these treads, for putting me on to the pertronix. i cant wait till it get here.
I put my pertronix on a stock 390 - didn't even know about a ballast wire. New Autolites gapped at spec. New 8.8MM plugwires, big dizzy cap conversion.
It comes with everything, just follow the instructions... it's a bolt in and run it deal. I did mine during a rebuild so I don't know if you will need to play with the timing, but that's an easy task. I would change the wires, cap and plugs to get the most out of your new spark system!
thanks for the info, i was reading all the post last night on pertronix, and was getting confised. somtimes i think a person can read to much. thanks again
I think that if you really want the full performance gains from the pertronix you need to get the coil that goes with it. I just did this conversion (I used the pertronix 2) in a 72' with a 390. First I put in the eletronic pick up device and It did start and idle a little smother, then I put in the flame thrower coil and realy started to feel the dfference. finnally I re-gaped the plugs to .050" and good golly did that make it RUN. I don't think you can run a gap that wide with the stock coil, so I felt like I didn't get the full performance gains till I did all this.
P.S. you don't need the resistor wire, remove it.
(I also am running 8.5mm SP wires)
