new guy with a question

First of all I would like to say hello to all.I'm new to the forum so if I'm asking a old question let me know where I can find the answer. I have a 98 4.6 XLT, a friend of mine has a motorcycle trailer that we are going to be using to haul our bikes to the track.

The trailer weighs 1100 lbs. Maybe 2000 with the bikes and gear. My friend thinks that we don't need a hitch, that we can use the ball on the bumper since it's rated for 5000 lbs. Is this correct or do I need a hitch? Any info would help.
Thanks

Welcome to FTE

The I prefer a hitch, but you will be fine using the bumper with only 2000lbs.

Yea, I'm going to go out and buy a hitch. I'd rather be safe than sorry.

Hitch costs less than $200, and installs in less than 20 minutes.

Also lowers the tounge height, which is often too high when using the bumper mount. Plus you won't maul the bumper!

Good luck.
