A flash point of 960,254 F is pretty good in my book. It's good to know that your entire engine could melt into a big glob of melted steel but your motor oil won't breakdown and will still provide protection under these conditions.
BTW here is an UOA of SuperTech oil (the SL rated one that I posted before)
Vehicle: 2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 4X4
Miles on vehicle: 318,000 miles
Miles on oil: 317,500 miles (took out factory fill and put in ST at 500 miles)
Oil filter: SuperTech (also with 317,500 miles)
Air filter: OEM
Make-up oil: 1/4 qt.
This is my only vehicle. The gas pedal has been stuck in the WOT position since the 2nd day of owning this vehcile (I've had it for 4 years now). Needless to say the oil got a workout and so did my brakes. I don't know why I haven't gotten the pedal fixed but oh well. Anyway I also tow my 5th wheel mobile home through Death Valley all summer long. My truck has overheated 14 times and one time I left it running and went in the house on a Friday night and forgot about it. Well on Monday morning when I got up to go to work I realized I had let in run the entire weekend. Last summer I also did the Baja race with the 1500. It ran WOT for about 15 hours until it overheated (that was the 14th time). I don't know if this will skew the results but one time about 175,000 miles ago my brother dumped in about 3/4 qt. of Dawn dishsoap (he said it would clean out my engine). I was sooo mad. But after I explained to him that he should have used Simple Green he realized his mistake. Anyway here are my results.
TBN was still high indicating it had active additives left in it. Too me everything looks good. Who the hell says Chevy can't build a truck? I think I might stretch this oil out to about 375,000 - 400,000 miles. What do you guys think?
Scan over to bobistheoilguy.com, there are numerous tests on the ST. Holds up very well and sometimes blows the doors off of other "namebrand" oils. Their synthetic version just came out and the verdict has not been given. They also make some great oil filters too. I also, was surprized at the quality of ST, but for some reason, I just can't see myself using it. Maybe in my moped.
Well, i use mobil, have never went wrong. I think we are scared of taking a chance on a 2000 peice of equipment. Also when people ask what oil you use, i am proud to say mobil 5W-30 with a Wix filter. I have never had a insult to that setup except once, someone told me to use a fram. I told him what fram stands for, and also explained the small amount of filtering media, and the poor anti-drainback valve problem i expirience, and paid 1200 dollars for trying to cut corners. Live and learn, i geuss.
I had a guy try and argue his Fram filter to me. I said, "Maybe you're right, maybe Fram is the best. Good luck with that." And I walked away. What do I care if some guy runs Fram, maybe he'll be just fine, most are. In return, whats it his business that I was buying oil from store, but not his oil.
SuperTech oil seems to be a pretty good oil.Just because it doesnt have Castrol,Mobil or Pennzoil on the label doesnt mean that it is garbage. It is API certified and meets the SL rating. We keep hearing how that a name brand has more additives than ST.If this is true, does it really mean anything? If someone takes a teaspoon of Dawn for dishes and another person takes a cup full for dishes, does the cup full get any cleaner? If a teaspoon is all that is needed, then a teaspoon is enough.ST is API certifeid which means that someone has put up a considerable amount of money to formulate an oil to meet API standards.API certification is volantary. For an oil to be API certified,it must pass the API tests and then the one having the oil certified must pay API to be liscensed to have the API Starburst and or Donut on the bottle.Check on some of the really cheap oil bottles they may have in writing "Meets SL" but they dont have the API Donut. Some Amsoil oil is not API Certified,no Starburst,no Donut.Amsoil may be good but it makes you wonder why no API Certification. The name doesnt always mean the best, does the name FRAM mean anything?
I work for a shop that gets marathon bulk oil in 55 gallon drums from a Valvoline distributer. the drums always come with a valvoline sticker under the marathon sticker. comes from the same plant, same supplier. just a different sticker. marathon oil is valvoline!
