My problem was the idle jumping up once the temp gauge got to between the "O" and "R" in normal and would send me down the street doing 40. I need to change out the TPS and clean the IAC, but in the meantime I just unplugged the IAC and turned up the idle screw a hair.
No check engine light, and runs fine. Don't forget to pull a cable off the battery before working on either.

You really have to pull the TB to get at the TPS, just remember there is coolant in the TB so make sure you clamp the lines before removing it.

Remember to TEST before throwing money at something
pull the codes
then check the suspect parts with a digital VOM (volt ohm meter)
all parts are good until proven guilty

That's what I was afraid of - not fun to do on a van!! When you say 'clamp the lines', can I plug them (i.e. cork)? EGR valve looks just as bad to get at.

Pulled codes and counted the 'check engine' light - came up 11's for ign on/eng off.

Don't mean to hijack this thread - but the problem was just like mine - erratic idle - sorry.

Fuggrur, how are you doing with your situation? Any progress?

Joe V.

I had same problem, idle speed was very high 1800rpm or so, very poor gear changes (it thumped into gear at low speeds), been like it for a while. Changed TPS on thursday, it now runs like a dream with very smooth gear changes at any speed even got kick down now and idles real good

good luck

My van runs ok but idle is not stable... When I look at the belt and tentionner while its running, I can see the tentionner shaking. Is it normal that the tension varies? Cleaned the IAC but nothing changed... What is the TPS?

Thanks

TPS = Throttle Position Sensor. It tells the computer (ECM) how much and how fast the throttle is open. Evidently you have to remove the throttle body to get to the TPS. It's not a big part, smaller than the ICV.
