my fuel gauge has not worked for my main tank since I got the truck a month ago. I finally pulled the dual switch out and followed the wires....one of the wires is not connected to anything. Was searching for the missing connection, but can't seem to find anything hanging with the proper male connection. So I was considering just running a new lead from the sending unit to the switch. my problem is I don't know what the colors are on the switch. I have orange, greeen and light green coming off the switch. The orange and green are connected and my gauge works for the aux tank. So if I run the light green to the sending unit on my main tank, will that work? thanks for any help.
That should work but the connections you're looking for are under the dash around the ignition switch. The main tank sending wire goes over the driver's door in the roof channel and back down the pillar. The aux. sending wire comes in thru the firewall on the driver's side. They both meet around by the ignition switch and plug into a connector that finally goes to the switch.
Thanks, BB. I spent a half an hour on my back under the dash trying to find the missing wire and failed. Was tempted to pull out the instrument cluster to get behind and look better, but decided I didn't want to chance opening a bigger can of worms. All the wiring looks pretty stock so I didn't really want to disturb anything. The only other electrical problem is my reverse lights don't work. would you happen to know if the switch for those is on the column somewhere or on the trannY? thanks
GQC,if it's an automatic trans, your reverse backup light switch is located on the top side of your steering column under the dash. It adjusts by loosening the 2, 1/4" screws (I think) and sliding the mechanism to the left or right. Have your shift lever in reverse. It helps to have a friend or a mirror behind vehicle so you can know when the light s come on. When the lights do come on when sliding the switch, stop and retighten the 2 screws.
IMPORTANT!! the switch also serves as the start selector for Park and Neutral positions. If you slide the switch too far, it's possible that you can start your truck in gear. This can be dangerous. Make sure you have foot on brake and nothing in front or rear of vehicle when starting the first time after adjusting rear backup light portion.
Thanks a lot, Sully! I'm glad I don't have to crawl under the truck, though that's how I found out the guy before me put the wrong bearing on the driver's side axle and didn't have it pushed all the way on! I'll try to adjust it when I get back on Sunday. Have a great weekend everyone!
