Hello again, how loud will this "spark knock" be? will i be able to hear it loud and clear while driving? or is it someting i have to do while its in park? Kinda new to all this and i appreciate all your imput!!
thanks!

you will hear spark knock when driving. If you hear something like it with the truck in park it's most likey the timing chains. the timing chains problem is the biggest pain. the sohc have two chains one in front ,one in back of the motor.
98iaexp,
I think maybe you should stop by a couple of dealers and see what they have to say about the warning signs of this possible problem. It has been almost six months, now, since I first discussed this problem with a service manager.I was in there,on a seat bolt recall, and HE ASKED ME if I'd heard any strange engine noises.I don't want to mislead you on this.I'm just repeatimg what I've heard to try to help.ok?
I'd never heard anything about this possible problem before then.I had two,4.0 OHV , Explorers before, that ran great! I bought this Mountaineer, for my wife, used, and I was excited about the SOHC,at the time. I'd had no experience with them. Now people ask me if I not afraid it's going to blow up on me.I wish I had known about this forum BEFORE I bought it.
This kind of feels like owning an airplane, where you have to keep putting money away for that engine overhaul that your never sure when is going to be needed. My next one will be a V8!
Huffer
Thanks for the imput guys! I dont hear anything right now that sounds like what you are talking about. I guess I just got a bit paranoid about all the posts on the site about the timing chains and the horror stories that go with it. I can just hear little tiny ticks in the motor, that i am passing off as normal sounds. I hear nothing on the lines of which you are describing. I contacted the dealer that I got the truck from, the salesman is a friend of mine, and he went to the service dept. and they said that (correct me if im wrong here) the cam tension chain?? was fixed. Does that make any sense at all? I hope that this is the part that everyone is talking about. But as far as the sounds go, I do not hear anything while driving. And thanks for reminding me about that seat bolt recall, my seat does kinda move a bit when I come to a quick stop and when I hit the gas. Having the seat break loose would just be lovely!!
I know what you mean about the paranoia.Sometimes, ignorance
is bliss! Did your friend say what month,or what year, the chain tensioner upgrade was applied?
I feel we've given this horse a good beating.I'm going to just sit back now and see if it's going to work or die on me!
That seat bolt recall doesn't stop that little seat movement.I believe that slop in the seat mechanism is in the design.

Check the bolts that go down to the floor .When I had the seat bolt recall done they did not have the bolt all the way down and my seat would move a little.
I will go ahead and check the bolts that go to the floor, hope that takes care of it, if not i guess i will have to deal with it, its not that big of a deal but can be annoying. The replacement on the chain was done about a year ago, so it should be ok I hope.
thanks again for your imput.!
Just so you know, its not the accual timing chain thats the problem , its the tensioner, It wears out and at approx, 2500 rpm it makes a Metallic Rattling noise (Fords ears). Mines doing it at the moment. My dealer sucks and will not replace it yet, so, Head office got a phone call from this guy! Its 01m01 , The service number( CANADA). Friggin FORD!
