I have an Edge EZ module 50 HP that I bought for my 2001 F-250 and an AFE intake. I am not interested in big HP just a little extra to help keep the truck from downshifting so much on slight grades when pulling my camper. I was considering doing some exhaust work. I read in another thread that for that HP increase I would be better off with a 3.5 down pipe instead of a 4 inch for better throttle response. Any suggestions? Also would a 3.5 help with EGTs much or do I even need to worry about them with a 50 HP mod?
Based on the research I've done, I'm sticking with the 3.5" DP. Anytime you can lower the EGT's I think is beneficial. I pull a camper and want to maintain the current throttle response and this seems to be achieved by the 3.5 versus the 4. I am also running a 60HP chip. The chip alone you purchased should help a lot with the downshifting and the exhaust will lower the temps.
Did you have any trouble with EGTs before you changed exhaust? I am leaving for the Bristol race next week. I will have the Edge module in place as well as my intake. I don't think I will have an exhaust by then and I don't have a pyrometer yet either. DO you think I will be OK?

Your truck comes with only a 3 in exhaust from the turbo back. a 3.5 and 4 in dp are aftermarket. Most exhaust kits from turbo back are still only 3.5 dp then a 4 in connector and 4 in the rest of the way back. You can get a 4 in dp if ordered separate. But then you lose a lot of bottom end until the turbo spools up (unless you have a 80 hp chip as this makes up the difference in the larger diameter, and loss of back pressure) I have found that most if not all manufacturers of larger exhaust kits are this way unless you special order the 4 in dp.
In answer to your question YES the bigger exhaust and and the 3.5 in dp do make a huge difference. However I would be very careful without a Pyrometer, Your truck will not stop itself from self destruction. Your truck will get well over 1500 degrees even with a bigger exhaust, melt your turbo and you got a lot of expense fixing it. My 2 cents worth is get the gauges and the exhaust before you put the chip in and do the job right save yourself a lot of time, money and guess work. Oh yeah and use the gauges too, back out of the thing before it gets over 1200 degrees.

Should I go with a 3.5 DP and 4 on the rest or 3.5 all the way?

My $0.02 - 3.5" DP and 4" the rest of the way back.
