Which Brand Gear Sets?

Which brand gear company should i use? looking for 4.10's.

Richmond Gear
Genuine Gear
Precision Gear
Ford OEM Gear

Front D60
Rear Sterling 10.5

All i need to replace is the Ring and Pinion and fluid right?
i want a civilized no slip system, the Power Trax should be good enough right? not looking for a full locker.

thanks,
-bigdawg

I asked the shop who is doing my gears what gears they use and which ones they won't............and he told me that even if I bought Richmond or Genuine and took them to him with cash in hand he wouldn't install them for me.

He did list Precision, OEM, and Yukon as gears that he will install that are good.

Hope this helps.

OEM is usually what most places will recommend. I have found that OEM gears tend to howl less than someone like Richmond. I would go w/ dana gears in the front and whomever makes the sterling gears.

arent richmond gears made more for drag racing? therefore a different matierial or sumthin???

only thing about the sterling is whoever makes the oem gears...you dont have as much of a selection unless you go aftermarket..

I have richmond's in my 9" and they work great. No noise/howling. I'd probably go for yukons in the future though.. Seem like they are a little better.

ho: Richard makes regular gears, and they make a special drag gear that is designed esspecially for racing.

Btw, PowerTrax lock right aren't any more civil then a regular detroit locker. I'd go with a torsen if you want civil.

I had Precision gears put in my rear Ford Sterling 10.25" axle and Dana Spicer gears put in my front Dana 60 reverse axle. With the Precision gears, I did not have to do a carrier change to go from 3.55 to 4.56. With other brands, I may have had to.

I also had a Powertrax LockRight installed in the rear axle. It is not as uncivilized as some make it out to be. It does make clicking noises and an occasional clank or clunk, but it's not annoying to me. I can feel it engaging and disengaging as well as hearing it, but it is still not annoying.

The new NoSlip version of the LockRight is supposed to be smoother and quieter, and more expensive as well, but still less than a Detroit Locker. The new Detroit Locker is supposed to be smoother and quieter than the old ones, and more expensive too.

For a stock-performing clutch-type limited slip, you can use the Traction Lock that Ford put in that axle as a factory option.

It appears to me, from Dana's website, that Dana makes the Sterling axles for Ford. Not entirely certain on that. I have also heard that Dana made the 9" and 8" axles for Ford as well.

the sterling doesnt have a carrier break...it uses the same carrier no matter what gear you put in it, just like the 9 inch and 8.8

you can use thick gears in a dana 60 to for instance, run 5.13's on a 4.10 and down carrier

yea, i doubt ford actually makes their own axles

For those axles, you can't go wrong with Yukon. For the D60, Dana Spicer would be a good choice. Ford gears are good to.
Go with Timken bearings.
