Oil consumption
My 99 5.4L has used 1 qt of oil during the last 3000 mile oil change interval. About half of that milage was towing. The truck has 12,000 miles on it and I use 5w-30 Mobil 1 and Motorcraft oil filter . I've never had to add oil before but also didn't tow this much during the previous intervals. Is this normal?
Also, when the truck has been sitting overnight or for long periods and first started, a slight rattling or engine knock can be heard for about 8-10 seconds. Appearently until oil pressure builds. It's done this since it was new. I'm aware of the piston slap problem some of these engines had but mine was assembled supposedly after the date the problems were corrected. After the initial 8-10 seconds it sounds nice and quiet. Is this normal? I sure hope so.

I would say to check it without doing the towing again. What you are seeing is not that bad for some engines.
Towing with high demands to the engine seems to accelerate oil USE/Consumption.
Check the technical service bullitins for your vehicle with the link to the left. You may not be alone.

Report it to ford. Register on the link at there home page.
Keep your records for the consumption. Later on At 60,000 miles it may be hard to justify.
By the way My 99 Ford contour takes 5.7(manual not with me here) quarts with the filter.
NOT 5.0 quarts. I used 5 the first time and was short from the start!!
