Engine Sleaves
Hi all,
I'm doing my first rebuild on an auto engine, and being a Ford man couldn't resist a 77' Highboy. The current engine is a 400, which was boared .040 over for it's last overhaul. My machine shop is telling me to either go ahead with .060 over, or find a new block.
In the Diesel world, we just replace sleaves. I know these engines can be sleaved, but my machinist is insisting that it will weaken the block too much. Ignoring the high cost of sleaves, does anyone have experience on this? To me, going sleaves just seems logical. Down the road when the engine needs another overhaul, I can press in new sleaves.
By the way, the plan (given a solid block) is a Crane truck cam & lifter set, roller rockers, Edelbrock 400 intake & 650 CFM carb. I'm porting the heads as we speak.
Thanks for all thoughts.
If you don't like the 060 idea, get a block and start all over. Chances are you won't completely bore that engine that many times.
For the price of sleeves, I can buy 2 blocks and have a spare!
A through block test with magnaflux and sonic testing is worth it regardless.
