My parents had a dog that had cancer in the leg- so we paid about $1500 in 1976 to have the leg removed. We had the only 3 legged dog in the neighborhood!

After a few months- the dog died anyway as the cancer had spread to the lungs.

At that point, my family vowed "never again" to spending big $$$ on pets.

If you want to spend $5000- go for it.

I just don't want insurance comming in and screwing everything up for us cheap people by raising vet bills through the roof.

here I go again

Friend of mine rented the former "servants'" quarters from a wealthy family in Washington, MO. They had a dog that had been in the family for years, grown up with all the kids, etc. One day it got out on the highway and got hit. They took it to the vet with a broken leg (the dog, not the vet). The vet told the dad that it would cost $20 to set the leg and put it in a cast, or $15 to amputate. (This was back in the '70s.)

So, to save $5, they cut off the leg of the family dog.

Im probably going to get blasted for this but in many instances vets are scam artists who want to make their living preying on people who are very attached to their pets ( i mean hey my dogs are family members) they run up all kinds of tests etc and frankly more times than not dont do anything to improve the pets life. case in point is the prior poster who spent the money to remove the dogs leg.. dog died relatively soon. I keep my dogs as far away as possible from the vet, let em live their lives, and if they get sick with something that is going to kill them ( all my dogs have lived almost 15 years) when it becomes a bad quality of life for them ( obviously in pain or cant move or enjoy life,) then i have em put down. these days with all the advances in human medicine they transfer it to animals and they can get more money out of ya ( and heck even in alot of cases human medicine has gotten out of hand, and not just the costs) Keep your vets away fromt he doctor

Here's a joke that seems appropriate...

A guy carries his lifeless limp dog into the vet and says "Doc- Can you do something for my dog, I don't want to loose it"

The vet says- "Ok- put the dog on the table."

With the limp dog on the vets table, the vet brings a black lab into the room that sniffs the limp dog and walks away.

The vet says"It looks like your dog is dead."

The man not wanting to accept the dog being dead asks "Theres got to be something more you can do?"

The vet then brings in a cat and puts it down next to the dog. The cat sniffs at the limp dog and says "meow". The vet promptly says "No, there is nothing we can do- this dog is dead. That will be $2000 please."

The man shocked at loosing his dog and now suprised at the bill responds "$2000- are you crazy, why so much?"

To which the vet replys "Well it's $50 for the visit plus $450 for the LAB test and $1500 for the CAT scan"

My dogs are family members. My dads is always complaining aboutthen shedding, wanting out, needing food or water, just being there. But when he thinks nobodys around, hes petting and talking to them. If I could afford $5,000 then no problem, but I would prolly ahave to go wih the $.08 bullet.
My lab was limbing, and I decided to take her to te vet. Always used the guy and seemed like a good guy. Looked at her and gave her a shot and said it should help. Decided it was arhiritis(what my family and I had figuire it was.) Went to pay and it was $50. His receptionist said, "He gave you the good stuff." Well if it had helped it would have been well worth it but it did nothing. Still mad.

A vet I knew once asked me when my horse was very ill, "how much is the horse worth to you?".

I replied, emotionally or financially?

Emotionally she was worth everything I owned, financially she would have to do with whatever I could afford at the time.

I think vets that worked out of their homes and traveled to your homes were much more reasonable. They get into a clinic and they start charging through the nose and start getting caught up in the, "charge them for everything at 100% overhead cost".

I have known my vet for over 20 years, when I first meet him, he would make me bets. He would bet me that if he did a test on the animal and it was normal, he wouldn't charge me, if it was sick he would charge me.

He now works in a clinic with six other vets and they newly remodled the clinic, so I don't see him much anymore. I can't afford to- if you know what I mean!
