"If they run -- they're VC. If they DON'T run -- they're WELL TRAINED VC!!!"
R. Lee. Emery played a marine seargent in a movie "Firebase Gloria" It could have been the same character. Anyone else see it? At 1 point Emery fraggs the officer in charge because the officer is incompetent and Emery doesn't want to die under his command {"I think it's time for a change of command"). At another point he gives a 'pep talk' to the troops wihile holding the severed heads of 2 American soldiers. ("I've lost all respect for these two soldiers who had the gall to die while on duty") Intense movie.
Believe R. Lee Ermey (the lovable drill sargent again) was also in "Boys in Company C" which was also a good Vietnam movie along the same lines as "Full Metal Jacket"

He was also one of the ghosts Michael J Fox had to deal with in "The Frighteners." He was in that Segall movie "On Sacred Ground" as leader of the bad guy mercenaries after Steven Segall. I am going to try to find that "Firebase Gloria" though, it sounds good.
Yeay, Mathew Modine and Vincent D'Onofrio have been in several movies.
Vincent D was Edgar/Bug in the movie Men In Black.
If you want a GREAT site for questions like this, check out imdb.com. It's the Internet Movie Data Base site. Type in a movie and it lists all the actors (among other things). Click the actor and it'll tell you everything they've ever done. Very cool! I visit it everytime I see a movie and can't remember where I've seen one of the actors.
It's amazing how many times I look someone up and see what they've done, and say "That's the same guy!?!".
Until a few days ago, I didn't know Pyle was Vincent D'Onofrio.
Excellent movie but for Vietnam based films I prefer the best Apocalypse NOW. I really think you can not find a better movie. And hell no I ain't no anti-war Jane Fonda person. I see war as a necessary evil - just some actions are not thought out as best they probably could. I will always support our troops, and our country. The drill sargents potrayal was probably one of the best acting roles ever - although he is a bit on the irratating level on mail call..
