i am thinking about turbo charging or super charging my 4.2L engine, but i do not know anything about it. what are the main differences between a turbo and a super charger. i'm not looking for a speed increase so much as a power increase, for mudding and what not.i would like to put twin turbos but i do not know if that is possible on this engine. if anybody has done it i would like to know what kind of preformance increase you got, and about how much it cost. thanks! any websites with anything remotley related to super chargers/turbo chargers would be appreciated.
To the best of my knowledge, nobody makes a turbo kit for our trucks. If you wanted one you would have to fabricate it yourself and have a custom tune made for the computer. On the other hand, several companies make superchargers for our trucks. A couple forum members here are running superchargers and I’m sure they can provide more information.
A couple of web sites showing supercharger offerings are
Yea, forget about the Turbo charger. There aren't any for our trucks. Horizon Huskies has his truck Supercharged, and I'm sure he could give you some much needed info on it. Give it a little time, he'll reply.
You could easily make a turbo setup for our trucks. All you need to do is custom design and machine new exhaust manifolds, exhausts, headers, discharge tube, and most likely setup a custom intercooler setup. There are several guys who are custom fabbing blowers. I spent a couple dollars at Trixters Racing in Dallas to get my kit sent up. www.trixtersracing.com
I have a vortech unit that has everything you need in it. You need 12-16 hours for install, and 200 miles for break-in. I don't have dyno numbers, but I also don't have a stock truck. We are anticipating 275 RWHP. This is before any tuning has been done.
Turbos are awesome because they dont have as much loss. Check this link out to get an idea of what a 5-6 PSI turbo can do compared to a 5-6 PSI Blower!
Derek is one hell of a man of customer service. He has hooked me up left and right. He also had gave me all the phone support I needed while doing the install. Good luck with whatever it is you decide on!
Well i agree it isn't worth it.. and absouletly no one makes a charger kit, i'm from canada and talked to a few turbo shops and called around the states and no one makes it, because i was going to make my own.. but the work that needs to be done is just un heard of
Now, I didnt say it wasnt worth it. I think they are. I personally dont have the merans to fabricate turbos on my truck. I work too much! hehe. I think turbos are much more efficient that SC's. Unless you have a roots-style blower, you arent gonna see boost until 3200+ RPMs. Refer to that link...thats more power than a "base" procharger kit (9PSI, 2 core intercooler) on the same motor!!
