I have never owned a 4 wheel drive before. I have driven and ridden in a few but I'm not sure which is the way to shift the 4x4 with my truck. I have a 1980 F-150 4x4 with borg-warner granny gear 4 speed and new process transfer case. With the front hubs locked I come to a complete stop before putting it into 4 high and again a complete stop before putting it back into 2. Can I shift into 4 high while moving. If so, should the clutch be used when doing this?? I dont have an operators manual for this truck and the one in my 64 F-100 says that in that year you can shift while moving. However I might be misunderstanding some of the other posts and it says I must come to a complete stop.... Sorry if I sound stupid...I just wanna know.....
To go into 4 hi put in the clutch, grab the shifter, and pull it into 4hi. into 2 hi hit the clutch and back into 2 you go. to go into 4lo come to a complete stop, put in the clucth, pull it into 4lo, and go. back into 2 come to a complete stop, shift into 2, and go. nothing to it.
And if you hear grinding an crunching that means no-no!
I've gound that most any transfer case fan go from 2hi-4hi and back while you're on the go as long as you're not peeling out or slipping while you do it. The front and rear tires are turning at the same speed so everything is in sync and will slip into gear. low gears usually require you be stopped although I've found (maybe not wise) if I through my truck in neutral while cruising at low speeds I can put it into 2 or 4 low and then pop it back into drive with no trouble.
I love them! Cool thing I've found is I can pull through almost any mess (haven't found any SERIOUS mud) with just the front axle. The weight of the front end seems to really pull through. I can't wait to get a locker up front.
as long as the hubs are locked, and your not spinning the tires, you can go from 2hi to 4hi, and vice versa while in motion. But going into 4lo you need to stop.
