Here's one thing buy a cheap cell phone that can still dial 911, just incase. That way you can get help! Don't forget hammer and scissors! You might not need them on your vehicle, but if you see someone else in need of help (accident or somthing) it'll be handy to have
all the trucks have a jack, jumpercables, small tool kit, family band radio, cell phone, some fluids etc.
bronco has 2 come-alongs, shovel and a highlift jack
the 87 "the beast" is a rolling farm shop
6hp IR gas powered compressor,8500 watt generator
oxy-acetylene setup, air tools, about 100 feet of chain in various lenths, binders, come-alongs, picks shovels, two halogen worklights, battery charger
To some degree it depends on where you live, and what your doing. If you live where it snows, cold weather survival stuff, snow shovel etc. If you do 4'wheeling then come alongs "good jacks" etc.
As for what "every" truck ought to have I think its mostly been menchoned above.
Jumper cable
tow rope
first aid kit
fire ext. (you never know I've had to use mine)
General tool box
-duct tape, JB weld, bailing wire, and general tools
If your on long trips extra hoses and fluids are a good idea
Etc. etc. etc.
And something no one has menchoned "tie downs" Whats the point of having a truck if you can't haul stuff in the back?
youre right alot depends where you live and your personality i mean heck most of us who drive pickups are kinda like do it yourselfers and tradesmen or off roaders who tend to take care of road troubles on our own. there are people who drive pickups who have no clue how to fix em or how to get out of a ditch etc those people should just carry road flares and a cell phone to call for HELP!!!!!
Ya know ive met more pretty girls having stuff to help others stuck on the side of the road yet another reason to have a well stocked truck!!

Agreed on the fire ext. I had to use my buddies at the race track on my 66... If it wouldnt've been there, it would have burnt to the ground.
And you don't need tie downs... just keep throwing stuff in the back til its full
I have noticed tools in general, and this may seem like a no brainer, but a CRESCENT WRENCH that way, if you cant find or dont have the appropriate size, you have a crescent wrench, even if you do have to readjust it every 2 turns
