I am getting ready to order a '01 F-250, super cab, short bed, v10, manual transmission and I'm trying to decide between the 3.73s and the 4.3s. I plan to put 33x12.5" BFGs on as soon as I get it and I don't plan to haul or tow anything. I wish they offered a 4.10 with the v10, because that would be about perfect. It seems to me like the 3.73s are going to be too small and the 4.3s are going to be too big. Any recommendations on which one to go with? I'd like to get as good of gas mileage as possible, but at the same time I don't want to end up with a truck that has a hard time pulling its own weight. Anybody else running 33s with the 3.73...if so, are you wishing you went with something bigger? What's the gas mileage difference between the 4.3s and the 3.73s?
If it were me...I'd get the 4.30's and put 35" tires instead of the 33's. I think the 35" tires look better and they'd lower the the 4.30 gears back to around 3.94 numerically. Or...swap in 4.10 gears and an Auburn limited slip differential and run the 33" tires. Just my opinions.
I don't think you'd have any problems running 33" tires and the 3.73 gears. Many other people run 255/85, 285/75, and 295/75 tires which are as tall or taller than the 33x12.50's. The only difference is the 33x12.50's are wider and will probably worsen your gas mileage more than the others.
I'm afraid that swapping in a 4.10 would be the best option, though I don't really like the idea. It's just a shame to pay $30,000 for a truck and then have to swap things out. Does anyone know why ford doesn't offer the 4.10 with the v10?
Right now on my 2000 F-250 CC shortbox auto, I am running 35 in BFG All Terrains, on 16.5" rims. My truck still has the stock 3.73 gears in it. You can tell that you lose some low end power, but I pull a 4 place snowmobile trailer with the truck full almost every weekend, with no problems. I have not had to pull anything really heavy like a fifth wheel or anything, but I have no complaints about the gears.
