I recently noticed some little rust spots showing on the tailgate of my 00 F350 SD. About a week later, I began to notice them appearing all around the truck. I stopped into a dealer today and the body shop tech said it was "rail dust." He stated that when they transport the trucks by train, they collect metal grindings from the rail cars. He said it was a simple matter of having the truck buffed out and rewaxing the entire vehicle. Has anyone else had this problem? My question is...why is it showing now and not sooner?
I also am experiencing another problem with the front end. When making sharp turns(right or left), I hear a loud thumping sound from the front. I have cranked the wheels both ways and looked under the wheel well for anything out of place...with nothing visible. I also hear/feel aloud thump on the left side when going over bumps in the road. Again..nothing appears to be out of place. Any ideas are greatly appreciated!!!
Rail dust is a common problem with the trucks. There is a TSB to address this issue on many Ford vehicles. It calls out a acid wash procedure that most dealers seem to ignore (my dealer used a clay bar to remove the rail dust). If you want, I can email you a copy of the TSB. Just email me and request it.
