Unhappy Ignition Problems 66 240

I just rebuilt the 240 in my F100 and got everything set , tried to fire her up but I am getting no voltage to my coil. The motor spins
, distributor and points check out. I am not getting voltage at the
wire(red) attaching to the + terminal of my coil. Does anyone have a way to trace this or have had the same problem. The ignition is stock(points and condensor). The ignition worked fine before I pulled the engine! Appreciate any help

Well, fer starters, a wiring diagram is pretty handy for these old gals. You may want to order one -- lots of places have them, eBay, Obsolete, LMC etc etc.

Is that red wire actually a red wire with a green stripe? The 65 wire is red-green to the plus side of the coil. If you have no voltage to the plus side of the coil, then it don't matter what is going on with your points etc -- you got no spark. Period.

My first guess -- go over to the firewall and make sure that the main connections are good -- a little dielectric grease, used SPARINGLY on each of the terminal is a good idea. If that doesn't work, then go over to the switch in the cab and make sure that the pink wire coming back from the firewall is attached.

By your description, you have no fire when you are cranking. You actually should have about 6-8v to the coil whenever the ignition switch is turned to "on". When its all the way over to start, such that the solenoid enganges, there is a special separate circuit that gives 12v to the coil while cranking. This second circuit attaches to the solenoid on the starter lug side. On the battery lug side there will be another wire coming from the switch, which is engaged obviously only when the switch is all the way in the start position.

In any case, IF you never have any voltage at all, whether you are cranking, or just sitting there, then you almost certainly have either a wire that is interupted between the coil and the firewall, OR it is shorted. If it is sorted, I'd think it would have burned the crap out stuff and you'd have noted. Its a non-fused circuit, I believe.

Hope this gets you started. Post back with more info.
