Oil Breather?

Ok, repairing a lawnmower, it runs like garbage. I looked at the air filter and the thing was caked with oil, so i pulled the air filter off and it ran just fine. I noticed that the mower was squirting a little oil out the breather tube, which is why the air filter is caked with oil in the first place. It squirted enough oil out to make spots all over itself and the mower sitting next to it. My question is, is the oil breather at fault for this? should i get a new one, or is it somthing else? the oil level is about 3/4 full, and its sitting on level ground. Do oil breathers normally fail? this is a newer mower (99). I do have the oil breather out and i dont see any physical damage to the exterior anywhere.

All help appriciated!

I'm still fighting this snow blower & your playing with a lawn mower.

I sure hope it warms up quickly.

Ive mowed my yard once already this year...
but that was just to mulch up some leafs and let them sit for fertilizer (very very small particles, I love this JD mower)
Didnt have to mess w/ a snow blower myself

My lawn mower with a 6hp Briggs was allowing enough oil vapor into the air filter to plug it up too. I solved the problem by unhooking the breather hose from the air filter housing and attaching a fuel filter to it so it would not have oil running out and would not let dirt into the motor. Problem solved.

hmm, this mower is a yardman push mower with a 6HP BRIGGS! hmmm, wonder if its really that common of a problem? I think i'll try the fuel filter trick, sounds cheap enough. have you had any negitve effects using this? I dont see how it could, but just incase.

Now I am wondering as mine is a Yardman. But my trick has worked for two years now. I also found that the dipstick lies, when I put enough oil in to reach the full mark it will burn out most of it. If I leave it so it just barely shows on the tip, about 1/4" it stays that way almost all summer. I've even tried STP. Got ahold of Yardman and they said to contact Briggs. I figure naaa ain't worth the trouble. I only gave $125 for the mower used, so I'll run it till it blows and go back to a Tecumseh like I had before. Had a 3.5 hp Tecumseh that lasted ten years before it blew and I mowed everything with it.

I always thought the briggs and stratton engines were better, i had a tecumseh on my craftsman mower and the thing wasnt very good. It ran ok, but where the dipstick tube met up with the block, oil always leaked out. Also when i took it apart for our small engines unit in tech, i couldnt get it running again. It was actually due to the fact that i didnt put the blade on, and it didnt have enough momentum to start the engine. Once i put the blade on, it fired right up. But i bought a brand new toro personal pace with the 6.5 tecumseh on it, and i love it. As a matter of fact its the exact same engine that was on my craftsman, but they updated the dipstick tube so there is a metal thing that holds it down so no oil leaks. I really like toro products, especially their warrenties, on the mower i bought ($359.99) it came with a 2 year warrenty, saying it will start on the first or second pull, every time, and so far its lived up to it. If you get the more expensive one ($449.99) it comes with the same warrenty except for 5 years. I could go on and on about lawnmowers, i love working with small engines (or any engines for that matter).

if you got oil comin out the breather tube...you got some serious blowby,,,sounds like its time for a rebuild to me.

you can make it run awhile longer with a filter and letting the tube vent outside...just watch the oil

Say what you want about Tecumseh engines, but I have a Sears mower purchased in 1971 with a Tecumseh that still starts on the first pull ! I think that's pretty good service.

A friend of mine built himself a road grader. He used a tractor rear mated to a chev six cylinder and trans. Had something like 16 forward gears and 4 reverse. Pretty cool, said he could put it into 1-1 and go in and get a cup of coffee and come back before it got to the end of his drive. About 75 ft.
But he was always fabbing up something.
