I have a 1994 Explorer 4X4 4.0 V-6 with about 143,000 miles. The check engine light came on a week ago. The strange thing about it was that when you start it up the check engine will not come on for about 30 seconds. The engine ran just fine until Wed. when it started to miss. I pulled the plugs to check then and the center cylinders on both side the plugs where wet with fuel.
I took it to a shop and had them look at it. After about 4 hours of looking at it they said that the computer was bad. I talked to the tech and he said that every time you turn off the key, the computer would erase the code. Also he said that he couldn't pull any code with the engine running. He said that he used a "cut outbox" (what ever that is) to pin point the computer as the problem.
Sounds possible. The computer doesn't go bad very often, but it can happen. The tool he used would have been a breakout box (I wish I could afford a breakout box) that plugs into the computer harness between the harness and the computer and allows you to safely run diagnostics on the EEC-IV system.
If he did his job right, I'm not going to second guess him, based on the information you've given so far.
Just for laughs, you could try running the EEC-IV tests yourself, and see if you can duplicate his results. Only requires a jumper wire/paper clip. See www.dalidesign.com/hbook/eectest.html
