leaking power steering pump

alright guys, i drive a 77 f250 with the I-6. for the last 4 days my power steering pump has been leaking like crazy. it is leaking out of the front of it. i think i got all this mess started by driving with a low amount of fluid in it for a while, you guys think that is the cause? also, do you think this pump is salvage-able, and how difficult is it to rebuild one (for a novice)?

btw... i tried searching for this info before i posted, couldnt find anything.

cheaper and less trouble to buy a rebuilt from the parts store , you burned the front seal running it low , bob

how would it be cheaper? i thought the rebuild kit, was only around $10. i priced the rebuilt pump at around 50.

If you just want to replace the front seal. Its a hydraulic seal not a oil seal and there difficult to find.

Replace the pump, -it is trashed. They are not rebuildable by a mechanic period. You can put new seals in but that will not fix the trashed pump.

Always install a return line filter when you work on a PS system.
