Yeah, I run my truck hard and the most I've ever hit was 4300rpms. I hit about 4000rpms everyday when I run er up in 2nd just to make noise. I very seldom take it easy on it. Aside from that I picked up a 0 to 8000rpm tack on a farm sale w/ at least $500 of bran new chevy internal parts that I'll never use for $5, all I wanted was the tack. It's an electronic tack and I set my redline at 4000rpms. I kinda feel like I'm not using it to it's full extent. A 0 to 5000rpm would be perfect for a 6 so you feel like your really "using" the thing if you get my drift. I get a useless feeling on my water temp guage, the truck runs about 175 degrees, but the water temp guage goes all the way to 280. What engine ever gets that hot? Call me weird but I must have some sort of "needlephobia" that I want all my guages running right in the middle.

Oh yeah, I could sure go for some of those right now, but my oil psi. and volts are fine (iequus whiteface guages from O'rielly's. www.iequus.com), I was just wondering why in the heck does a water temp. guage go all the way to 280? I rode in my friend's new chevy and it runs about 210 reg. (nice heater, compared to my 175) which boggles my mind a little since in the morning it'll creep all the way to 200 and then drop like a rock to 170 then warm back up to 175 to 180 w/ a 190 degree thermostat, even w/ cardboard covering 3/4 of the rad. in the winter (well it was 10 below at the time, miricle it even started, had to use ether one day)
im going to pick up a new temp gauge sometime this week.. im sick of the gauges that are in the truck. I first of all... dont trust them, and second of all, hate the fact that there is a tiny chunk for low, and a tiny chunk for high, and then 4/5ths of the gauge is normal
I would agree that it's hard to trust the factory gages anything with a huge normal range can't be good.
I checked out JCW on YAKK's advice and there is some real cheep gages on there some were less then 10 bucks. I just have to deside which ones to get. I might just get the Autometer gage cause i have had bad luck wih some stuff from JCW.
I wouldn't worry about the DatCon Tach, It is industrial grade.
That big sweep with only 4k should be very accurate.
Personally I prefer the one with a black bezel, which JCW doesn't carry.
Look for the datcon elsewhere, may cost some $$, but is probably well worth it. DatCon WebSite
I know where you're comin' from with the other stuff as far as knowing what it is.
