Does anyone know if a late model Dodge Ram (93-2002) axle (1/2 ton Dana 44 or 3/4 ton Dana 60, both straight axles) can be swapped in a 80-96 1/2 ton TTB Ford.
I had two thoughts:
1. Change the front suspension of the TTB ford from coils to leafs (like the F-250 / 350) cut the extraneous Dodge Ram 4 link, coil spring mounts off the donor axle, add leaf spring perches and bolt the axle in or,
2. Somehow adapt the axle using the existing suspension on the Ford 1/2 ton, kind of like the coil sprung straight axle Ford's from the 70's
Just looking for another alternative for a SAS, the D44 straight axles from 70's fords are becoming harder to obtain and you almost need to get a home equity loan to buy a D60 from a pre-superduty F350...
sure if you want to switch transfercases too. dodge and chevy are passenger side drop whereas ford is driver side drop. a ford xcase wont line up with a dodge pumpkin. sorry.
but!
dodge and chevy D60s are much less money than a ford D60 fro some reason that is beyond me.....so if you can get a dodge/chevyD60 for real cheap you might want to look into getting a passenger side drop np205 or something along those lines. after all is over and done you may have less into dadge/chevy axle + passenger side drop xcase. but i dont know what kinda of deal you can get.
well, the dodge axle would seem to be a good swap at first.. It's the right width, the diff is on the correct side, and it has the right bolt pattern..
However... It's low pinion, and most have the centeral disconnect setup, so you can't use lockers.. Also the dodge 60's use the same CAD system, and have smaller 30 spline shafts iirc.
There really isn't anything wrong with using a low pinion axle if you aren't going to be doing a major lift. if you're the "trim it 'til it fits" type, get a GM D60 and then cut and sleeve the tubes to get the proper drop and trim the fenders to fit your tires.
I'm looking into doing a low pinion 60 swap with leaf springs if i do a dual t-case setup. that would make my front DS almost 40" long and alleviate ALOT of the excessive angles usually encountered.
Almost everything I've heard about last model dodge axles is very bad. Btw, on 96+ dodge axles, they have driver's side drop like fords.. the older ones did not
This is just something that I seem to think I once heard, maybe. But didn't Dodge have some problems when they went to the newer body style circa 94 and have to do a revamp of their axles around say 96. Thought someone once told me there was a problem with the tempering of the steel which made them brittle and prone to breakage. Could it be I am full of male bovine excrement?

i have just what you need. i have a dana 44 solid axle out of a 79 bronco. it has everything. steering linkages, track bar, radius arms w/ brackets, manual locking hubs, 3.50 gear ratio, and coil springs. all you need is rotors and calipers. i was told the 80-96 wil work. i was going to do the solid axle swap on my 94 bronco but i decided to just get a 2 inch lift and leave it alone. if your interested in the axle let me know.
