For the 79 ford trucks, if i wanted to run 4 KC type lights, and 2 backup lights, would i have to run dual batteries? The setup i want is to have 4 lights on a lightbar behind my cab, and 2 additional backup lights. thanks
As noted DEFINITELY use relays. I have 2 KC's up front, 2 55w rear bumper lights, and 2 55w side lights tucked up against the frame to light up the area when you get out of the truck. I did not need to do anything different with the single battery or standard alternator that's in the truck.
All auxillary lighting is powered through relays. The power feed for the relays comes directly off the positive battery terminal. Each power feed is protected by an auto reset circuit breaker. Proper gauge wiring is critical for a safe installation.
I have a switch and indicator lamp for each circuit inside the cab - the power to the switches and the indicator lamps is fed from an additional power feed that I've installed next to the fuse box. The beauty of using relays is that they only need a tiny amount of amperage to be energized, so the primary current feed does not go through the switch (safer), it goes from the battery through the relay, then to the light itself.
I can run everything at the same time if I want with no problems at all.
