In my 79 with only a 302 on a good day I get 13 or 14 driving 55mph down the highway, if I go 65 it just gets out of it's fuel efficency range and goes to about 10mpg. Then agian we may have different rearends.
if i was to change to th 5sp...would it help my mileage? is th final drive ratio higher than th workin 4 or or th c/6 ?
Im not havin real good luck with this c/6 , ive installed an atermarket kooler kit and built it completely(th tranny) but it still overheats and burns th fluid up .in time it ruins th clutches and pump .could this be because my headers are so close to th tranny oil pan? this is th second time in one and ahalf years ive had to rebuild it...and its costin me big money ever time..im not thrashin on it either , i take real good care of my lil 69

I could tell ya eveything you ever wanted to know about my 86, but this 79 I've never been to involved with, I barely drive it although it beats the hell outta my 300 and has A/C, it's only 2wd and kinda rusty and the carb is screwed up. If you happen to know the door codes I could tell you the rear-end unless they are the same for the 86 to, then I have that manual and I could jsut cross reference in that.
What # am I lookin for on the rear-end, I know it's 9 in. just by lookin at it, but it won't just come out and tell me the ratio will it?
Whether it's a 5 or 4 spd they both have a 1:1 high gear ratio, so that won't matter, unless you can find a ZF and some how bolt that up, that's 4spd and a OD, but it seems like you have this truck set up for some racing, but you still want good gas milage, that's gonna be hard to accomplish. Anyway going from a auto to a manual is a little more work then it seems, you have to somehow hang a clutch and get your master and slave cyl. all set up, plus torch out your floor and hope that newer tranny's stick shift comes through in a workable place. But once that's done you sould be good to go except for your drive shaft length.
there is a tag attached to one of the housing bolts on the carrier. it'll end in 75, 03, 89, or 11, most likely you won't be able to see the first digit.
no this truck originally had a 4spd in it . i still have th pedal , hangars and all ,everything but th bell housin , pressure plate assy and th tranny.
i dont do any racin its just an ol truck i kinda like to beat around in , my dad owned it and when he died my mom kept it and i put an automatic in it so she could drive it . when she died i restored th paint and built th engine , i drive it daily .
