Yes a direct fit replacement. Caution, The engine in the 76 is most likely a 360 rather than a 390. I am writing this to inform you that because they are identical on the outside ALL FEs become 390s on sale day. No idea what the asking is but at, $150 or so don't sweat it for a good running engine, if a lot more make seller verify stroke in your presents.
That can be done with a piece of wire in a spark plug hole and rotating the engine completely, turning by hand.

Thank you John, you covered everything I needed to know plus a little extra. It's much appreciated! I'm going to look around a little more but will probably purchase it this weekend if nothing else comes up.
