I read somwhere here that every now and then, you should engage the 4x4 in order to prevent it from messing up. Is this true? I have a new fx4 and I just wanted to know when would be a good time to do this. I would hate to ruin my beautiful truck!
I heard that too. Since the forward transfer case doesn't get used very often, I was told to engage the 4WD from time to time to move the gear oil around and keep everything lubricated. It made sense at the time, and I do it every month or so. My '91 Ranger 4x4 never had a problem.
Dont do it on the road unless you go dead straight, and even then it is better to wait till it rains. You will load up the dirve train and put undue stress on the components. Better to take it off road now and then. But it really isn't a big deal.
My Bronco 2 with manual hubs is easier than your auto hubs. I lock them in and leave the transfer case in 2H. This spins the axles, and spider gears in the front diff. But I go off road so much now it dosn't matter. It is my well used.
Its a good idea because it keeps the seals from drying out by lubing them when the fron axles are engaged. And you can do this on the road if you want to, just put it in 4HI not 4LO. It wont hurt anything. If the roads are icy just be careful and go slower.
I have had five 4x4 Ford trucks since 1990. Only used the 4x4 when I needed to. I have never encountered any problems.... Your best bet, read the owners manual.
