Modified Air Box

Not that I do not mind buying add ons but does anyone see any potential problems with modifing the stock air box , I drilled about 1 1/4 holes in a honey comb shape all around the box and installed a K & N filter. Seems to work,, I do here a wistle like sound when I im the 3 to 4000 RPM range.

the FIPK looks good but what is the difference?

you want cool air entering the air box, hot air cost hp, I have seen it on dynos several times, guys that leave the first half of the air box off and have a K+N sticking out of it are actually hurting hp, if that K+N addes 3hp then you are lossing 4-5hp from the heat, I would buy a REAL cold air induction or make a good heat shield. Good idea though, if you look around a little you can make your own ram air or something.....

Almost forgot, you need to disconect the battery for at least 20 min. to re-program the ecm, you are now bringing in a lot more air, the computer needs to know this, it will adjust the fuel and timing to take advantage of this more air-fuel-timing=more power!

The changes it makes are so small that you'll never feel it. Plus, I find it hard to swallow that the computer will alter timing because of holes in the air filter housing.

I know I should have stated that were talking 0.02hp gains, but the computer does need to learn of your adjustment, so the computer does need to be reset.

So do I need to get a cool air ram and unhook the battery if I have a superchip programer?

Fresh cool air makes power, so no matter what you do just make sure it is getting cool fresh air, and lots of it. It looks like the K+N filter charger kits have a heat shield for that reason. Any time you do something that alters anything that has to do with the engine the computer needs to be reset, even if you have a chip or programmer or anything.
