How much is too much?
I have had my 96 XLT for 8 years now... and I have run it on fumes quite a few times... to the point where it got real close to 20 gal on the fill-up... but 2 days ago, for the first time in 8 years the fuel pump said it put 21.4 gal in my car... is there any possible way that a 96 Explorer XLT would take 21.4 gal? Or was this a case of getting ripped off by a miscalibrated pump?

It has an advertised 21-gallon tank but it has a 3-gallon back-up capacity so we have a 24-gallon tank. I actually filled 23.8 gallons before. Yes...the "Check Gage" light came on for a loooong time. 
Haven't done that since though.
Note: Never empty out the tank, you can shorten the life of the fuel pump dramatically.

My wife was freaking out the other day. She said that the needle was WAY below E for quite some time and the low fuel light never came on. I should have asked her how much she put in.
