Originally posted by sglaine Thats good Cincinnati has jobs but where I live it is not as pretty as that. In our State we have had downsizing of 3 Companys this year alone that killed 2000 jobs. And nothing has realy picked back up from that. I,m sorry to say but I do not beleve the goverment saying that thing are getting better. It is like the Goverment said that was weapons of mass distruction in Iraq and that was the reson for the war. But come to find out the Bush add. Lied about that. The only reson we are there is because the 1st Bush did not finsh the job the 1st time we where over there. We have nothing for steel plants like we used to textile fact. are over seas now along with other goods. I would say no we are not better off. Also the transportion busnisses are going to take dive this year due the fuel prices. That might put me out of a lot work that I do.
If economic conditions are poor in your area you may have to move where the jobs are. I moved from the NE to the South 25yrs ago and I've been employed ever since. 50 yrs ago people were moving North for jobs, it's a natural process. Adapt or suffer the consequences.--Jack

A place I worked several years ago stayed out on strike for over 3 months for a nickel raise. They're never gonna make up for the wages they lost while they were out. But they voted on it themselves. They could have changed their minds and gone back to work, but they were encouraged by their union representatives, who just happened to be the only ones who didn't suffer any losses over the issue. They continued to wear shark-skin suits and drive Cadillacs out to the picket line to show their "solidarity".

I hear what your saying become a Republican and become blind to what is realy going on here I don,t think so Why should I move from where I have lived all my life and pull my kid from the school she go,es to. The real problem here folks is that the republicans have lied more about the real deal here more then the Democrats did. We went to war for what weapens of mass dist. No the Republicans could not produce them. I am not saying that the Democrats are any better they are not. The bottom line folks they are all crooket some more than others. The fair trade deal has always been a bad idea from the get go. We are taking a pounding here the Republicans & Democrats have sold us out to the foreigners. So they can line there pockets.
Where I am unemployment runs about 5% - to low to hire anyone decent. We usually sort through about 50 applications for every one person we ATTEMPT to hire. For every ten we attempt to hire, 5 fail the drug screen, and the 3 fail to last the first month (usually the first week). So for every 500 applicants only 2 where worth while investments. We aren't looking for skilled employees, we just want people not taking drugs and show up for work sometime around start up and don't leave until sometime around quitting time. As far as we're concerned the unemployment rate is too low.

If you choose to stay in an economically depressed area when there are areas with a surplus of jobs then don't complain when you wind up unemployed, it was your choice. No one ever said Freedom was easy.-Jack

Any of you that believe a president can come into office, snap his fingers, inact some legislation, and immediatly divert the world's largest free market overnight are niave. Catastrophies are the only thing that possess that kind of power.

Haulingboat, your first sentence is absoultly true. As far as jobs go, I will repeat myself. Walk into any store (I'll use electronics as an example) there are two DVD players sitting on the shelf. One is Panasonic, price:$100. The other is McIntosh, made in USA, price: $175. Same features, same warranty, heck, they even look alot alike. So, now for the big test, which one do you buy? Well, the average American buys the Panasonic and keeps the $75 in his/her pocket. You have just voted one hundred times. Voted a job overseas. Make the product a Toyota, Honda, etc., and you have voted 20,000-30,000 times. Double that for Lexus (overpriced garbage). I cannot believe there would be anyone in this country who could make a valid argument against the above scenario. THE PRESIDENT DID NOT DO THIS. Every American who spends their money on foriegn products has done this. Sold out? To whom? If you are pointing the finger, there are probably 3 more pointed back at yourself.
camo4stealth makes very good points. If you are really concerned about losing jobs over seas then you have to be willing to buy the american product, even if it costs more, that is another kind of patriotism folks. None of us is perfect, but I try really hard to find out where stuff is made and see if there is an american alternative and even harder to by the american product. As for the economy, I've always felt that the president (regardless of which party) always gets too much credit for a good economy and too much blame for a bad one. By the way, not all of the Bush tax cut made it through congress so it is unfair to say that he hasn't done enough to stimulate the ecomomy, he tried to do more, but it got caught in congress, whether or not the rest of the tax cut would have helped, who knows? Partisan politics suck and are killing this country. The upcoming election is a good example, i don't think either candidate is qualified to wash my damn truck, let alone run the nation, but I'm going to have to either throw my vote away or pick the lesser of the two evils (yet to be determined). At least all of us here have done something to support the economy in the good old US of A by buying a FORD!
That's a good question to ask anyone whining about the supposed bad economy. "what make of cars/trucks are sitting in your driveway"? I know what make are sitting in mine, Ford and only Ford.--Jack

Ford truck and a Pontiac (Sunfire) at my house.
Looks like my original question was somewhat answered and others are thinking along the same lines. Buy American, even if it costs more, and our jobs stay here- to an extent. You've all been helpful in my search for the truth...

I've made this point frequently to people who complain about "cheap Chinese tools" or clothes made in Bangladesh, etc. Those countries are not forcing their products on us. It's our own American companies, wholesalers, distributors, and so forth who are buying these goods and putting them out on the shelf for us. And, it is us - real, live, honest-to-goodness Americans - who are plunking down our American dollars to buy it.
As recently as Feburary,Bush's economic team has said that "HIS "programs "WILL" create 2.6 million jobs this year.In a speech at Dauphin High School in Harrisburg,Pa.,Bush was promoting his $500 million program for education and job-training programs. On a side note,if the jobs don't materialize,Bush could be the first president since Herbert Hoover to preside over a net loss of jobs. For someone who doesn't create jos,he's sure trying to convince us he can see that they are created.
