I'm thinking about putting 31's or 32's on my 96 explorer and I've read that one should regear gears to 4.10. Is this true/needed? BTW: This truck is my daily driver that wants to see some offroad. Thanks
Even if you have 3.55 gears, 31s or 32s will not be bad. Yes regearing is a good idea and will help with gas milage and power, but if you don't have the cash now and you want the tires, gears can wait. I ran 33x12.5s with 3.73s and it was my DD. I had no problems and gas milage only went down about 1 or 2 mpg.
what's the diff. between 3.55 and 4.10 because i'm told to get the 4.10's i'm also using 3.55. is it bad to run big tires and 3.55 other than gas mileage?
Here is a chart that shows what size tire and what gears are best to be run with that size. http://www.4wheelparts.com/Tirel_Gear_Ratio.asp
It is all about keeping the RPMs down or at least at a good level. The taller the tire the "taller" the gears. As your tire size goes up, the gear ratio should go down(even though the numbers actually go up). I'm not good at explaining it and i hope someone who is better at it will chime in...
Those look to be what you need, but I don't know what you are putting them in. I assume the 150 that is listed in your signature. I got my gears for my Bronco II from Randy's Ring and Pinion, but that is a good price on 4.10s.
