I am selling my 99 F-350 and I received a call today with a question I could not answer.
The gentleman interested in the truck would like to tow 4,000 lb in the truck bed. The rear GAWR is 6,210 lb. Based on that, I think it is no problem.
What are your thoughts?
He said he has been renting a friend's F-250 that has an additional leaf added to the springs and he wants to know if he'll have to do this with mine. If so, any estimate about the cost of adding a leaf?
An F350 should do it with ease. The extra spring on the leaf should be there on the F350 I would think, being a more heavy duty than F250. I actually took the extra spring out when I put air bags in. Anyway, he really is not "towing" in the bed...more like carrying. 4K is a lot, but still within range of the truck IMO, might want to add Air Bags anyway. I am no expert and am sure someone will chime in with a better answer for you.
That's over the payload for your truck. stanggt, there is very little difference, and in fact no difference in the newer trucks, between the springs on an F250 and an F350 SRW. The difference in the newer trucks is simply the size of the rear blocks.
The CC and PSD add a lot of weight to the truck. Can it handle 4000 lbs of payload? Probably. You payload is probably somewhere around 3100 lbs.
So what is the selling apeal of a 350 vice 250? I was thinking about getting a newer '01-'03 F350 to replace my '95 F250. I tow a 3K race car, 2K trailer, and have a cab over camper loaded with race equipment (generator, tools, compressor). Should I stick with my '95. It seems to handle all the weight pretty good. Thanks for any input!

The F350 gives you a higher GVWR on the sticker! The main difference between the two, like I posted earlier, is the size of the rear blocks. There are more differences between the older models so upgrading from your 1995 would make a difference. Superduties all have a Dana 60 in the front now, instead of the IFS Dana 50 that the F250's used to have. Main benefit is the GVWR sticker though unless you're talking F350 dually, and that's a completely different discussion.
Oh yeah, dually is what I was talking about. I did not know they made a F350 in a non-dually version. I guess I have so much to learn. I don't even recall ever seeing a non-dually F350... boy do I feel dumb. Maybe I should stick to cars:-)
payload for 2001 f-250 cc is 3,225 lbs, max payload on a f-350 is 5225 lbs. Duals control the side to side movement better when pulling loads, no weight difference between the two axels, hitch towing is 10,000 lbs. for both models. Max gcwr is 20,000 lbs for both. This is my understanding on these two model years.

no difference between single and duel axel weight ratings. rating between 99 and 2001 shouldn't be much difference.
payload= all fluids, passengers, additional accessories, and load.
If in dought, owners manuals have rating printed in them.
