I just finished trying to make my dummy oil pressure gauge work according to the procedures in this and other Ranger websites. I am sorry to report my failure. I found one of the recommended new sending units but the swap didn't work. Two problems, the first of which could be overcome. In my 99 3.0L automatic the trans filler tube and a useless bracket with nothing attached interfere with the new sender which is much wider that the stock one. The stock junker is about the size of a spark plug. It even uses a 13/16” deep socket to remove. The recommended units are about the size of a small lime; just like in the old days of 60’s Fords that I grew up with.
The second problem is with the resistor on the back of the main instrument panel. On my truck there was none as described with the red-blk-blk-gold-brwn stripes. There were other resistors and diodes and I tried jumping them but the gauge acted the same; the needle moves a bit off the peg with the main switch on and then jumps to mid-point with the engine running. There is no gradual movement just the instantaneous action of a switch. What happened? I dearly want the stock gauge to be a real one. I just bought two other function gauges for an A pillar mount because I thought this modification was a sure thing.
