My wife hit a 1000 pound moose at 55 MPH and got a small cut on her toe (she was wearing sandals). $3700 in damage. Many parts were replaced but the only things it needed to be drivable were a windshield and a wiper motor. My buddy fixed that car at the body shop he works at. The next week a Hyundai came in that hit a 100 lb deer. That brought the roof of that Hyundai down 7 inches. My wife walked away when she hit that moose. I know we all dislike chebbies, but a chebbie cavalier saved my wife's life that night. I know a lot of police officers (I'm a cop as well) and they all said she should have died when they saw the photos. The moose hit her side of the windshield and I will never know why he didn't come through and kill her.

out by my grandparents teres horses. Its not a big problem but when you hit them it breaks their legs and their bodys hit the roof/go through the windshield. I would imagine it would be almost the equivilent of hitting a moose only not as heavy.

We hit a 28 point mule deer with an astro van at about 60mph when I was younger. Totalled the van. Some cops did stop by to pick up the deer and leave us stranded though.

the first night driving with my dad that i had my permit (my dad drives for a living, but in a van, not a semi) i pulled out of pine bluffs wyoming and just had the 94 e150 up to 75, it was about 1 mile, mile and a half out of town, at the wyoming/nebraska state line that i had an 8 point buck step out infront of me. the front two tires had flat spots on them (i think the tires are still around here too)the van was half sideways when i hit it with the front passengers side, then flew around and nailed the side door. only took out the headlight trim, turn signal, and dented the side door, which left hair and bone on the bolts that stuck through the door like a hole punch. broke the fiberglass behind the headlight, but it didn't need to be fixed for it to be road worthy. kinda sucked for just a few minutes on my permit.

My wife and sister-in-law hit a deer once. Damage: broken head light and two smacks to the back of my head. The first was when I ask if they got the carcass. The second was when they said no I asked why they did not follow it and drag it back and throw it in her pickup bed.

When roads are built into the animals living room its our fault

Any Judge that would rule in favor of the driver is an idiot.

Opening seasons are used to control populations but over kill woould lead the USA back to the day when there were fewer animals.

Yes, I have hit several deer, its not the states fault its mine, I accept the fact had I been driving a bit slower, paying more attention it may not have happened.

I have a Racnhhand bumper on my truck now!!! COme on deer I like steak!!!!

www.ranchhand.com

Anyway the last deer was at 85 mph on the interstate, NO DAMAGE, just a bit of poooooop down the side.

Hunters are the reason we now have deer, we have limited the season.

Do you have any idea how much money HUNTING and FISHING generate? Millions per state.

I have hit two deer. The first was in an Explorer about 3 or 4 years ago. Took out a fog lamp and left a scrape on the bumper. The other was about two years ago in a Subaru Outback. I centered that one at about 55 - I can still see it flying across the road and rolling along the opposite berm about 10 times. The Subaru was heavily damaged, but it was driveable. I'm not sure if all the insurance companies in PA are the same, but State Farm classifies deer collisions as comprehensive claims. Both times I just paid the deductible.

BTW - The PA Game Commission estimates that we have 80-100,000 deer-vehicle collisions in this state every year.

After a while you learn what times of the day they move and where they cross.

Lots of close calls with deer.
I had a deer commit suicide on the rear door of my old crew cab about 2 years ago. It just ran out and into the side of the truck. I had a pheasant break my windshield by flying into it when i was going 40mph.

I've hit quail too. you see ONE cross the road and think your ok, then 40 of them run across the road and under the truck. somehow they ussually all make it.

I've NEVER hit an Emu, but there are a few ferel ones outside of Airway Heights near deep creek and they ARE NOT afraid of cars. they are teritorial and WILL stand in the road and challange you for their territory and they can run at 25mph.

Sometimes driving NW of Spokane is like driving in a Loony Tunes cartoon, animals just flying this way and that way.

I've hit several deer. Almost a dozen to be exact. I work until midnite or later every nite. I drive mostly back roads home so I see quite a few deer on the way home. The best thing(if there is a good thing) about hitting the last one is it's bigger than any my brothers have shot. They couldn't believe how big it was. I had to call them to come and get it for me because I was in my then Ford Contour. The deer head is now hanging on my wall. It scored 105 points and weighed about 175lbs. Almost totaled the car. My uncle has bought the car from me so I no longer own it. I've hit about 3 or 4 in my truck with the brush gaurd on it and you can't even tell it. Needless to say I only drive my truck now.

It's a sure bet when you see once deer, HIT THE FRICKEN BRAKES because there is another or two or twenty near.

Daylight and nightfall is the most active times.

But during rutt anytime is the right time.

Remember drivers ed?????? if you hit a baseball and you are driving 60 mph and the ball is suspended by a string? You just hit the baseball at 60 mph.

So hitting a deer at 60 mph, its like hitting a wall, really the deer is not moving , physics?// High school Physics???

Ex-wife had one jump infront of us, hit the hood and windshield, smeared slobbers down the side, I could only think this is going to hurt and she ran off.

Traveling to work in Kansas one morning, I came upon a Toyota van, the man had hit a nice 10 point buck (I still have the rack) he was trapped in the van by the steering wheel.

Last fall near ST. Joe Arkansas, Jack Yancy owner of Yancy's feed store was killed when a deer came through the windshield of his F-250. www.HarrisonDailytimes.Com.

Slow down if you can or try to hit them at a glancing blow, choose the corner of the vehicle without the battery if you can.

Do hit the ditch, that can kill you, when impact is probable make use of it to your advanatge. To may people hit the brakes and this only makes the crash worse. If you can spinn the deer off the corner of the car you are better off.

I looked under my hood and the new 6.0L PSDs have a battery on each side.

Come to think of it I nearly hit a deer in St. Louis about a year ago. I was driving past a neighborhood just off of I70. That was the last thing I was expecting in the middle of the city. Luckily I was driving slow expecting kids to run accross the street.

Do those sticky deer warning things that stick to your bumper work at scaring away the deer? Does it make an noise we can hear or only the deer? I was thinking about getting some since I see lots of deer around MO and KS.

If you hit a deer can you keep the meat? Or would it not be worth it (tainted meat from damage)? I heard once that we were not allowed to take the carcass.
