LSD Rear End
-I am not going to put 4.10's in (yet), so will I be able to do so in the future after installing the LSD?
-What brand would you guys recommend? I've heard of Auburn and that they are pretty good.
-Anyone know of a price on a good LSD rear end installed?
-Does it actually help out with traction that much? In other words, will it improve my launch?
And that's all I can think of for now. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

I am very interested in putting an LSD rear end in my truck. I have a couple of questions because I am not to familiar with this.
-I am not going to put 4.10's in (yet), so will I be able to do so in the future after installing the LSD? Yes, you just need to disassemble the whole thing

-What brand would you guys recommend? I've heard of Auburn and that they are pretty good. Ive heard a great of good about Auburn (not rebuildable), Eaton (rebuildable & factory LSDs), and Powertrax (who I originally wanted, but found too expensive & rebuildable)
-Anyone know of a price on a good LSD rear end installed? Tom was saying around 600 for him with the powertrax, but I have also seen places advertise installs for much lower. The auburn was like 300 plus install, so that may be a good number. Check the texas motorsports, I hear they do installs as well!
-Does it actually help out with traction that much? In other words, will it improve my launch? It will help your launch, simply because if you DO spin, do tires will grab. In theory, you should be able to get out of that slip quicker
And that's all I can think of for now. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Hope that helps lil Joey bear!

I'm suprised that you didn't just ask me this question. I've talked about L/s's and lockers all the time. And you know my Auburn is a piece of junk! I paid 350.00 for it and it's shot already, so is my brothers.
Any clutch style limited slip is going to perform like junk and wear out quickly. some can be rebuilt, others can't. The Auburn cannot be rebuilt so you need to dump a brand new one in every time you wear the clutches out.
This is what you should do Joe.
You mentioned that you were not, at this time, changing your gears. This is a great opportunity to save ALOT of money on installation.
Get the Powertrax NO-SLIP !!! It's a true locker and one of the latest in technology. It installs right inside your stock open diff and you can do it yourself. You can research and find them for 249.00. No clutches and no wearing out. It will last the life of your truck.
The difference between an l/s and a locker is that a locker actually locks your rear axles to a one to one ratio when you hit the gas. These give you the absolute best traction available. Plus, they don't wear out because they have no clutches.
The only advantage to a clutch l/s is that they feel practically non existant because the clutches slip so smoothly. These are good for mini-vans and soccer moms who need a little extra traction on the grass. If you buy a clutch l/s and do 3 or 4 burn outs, you'll kill it. Trust me, stay away from them.
POWERTRAX NO-SLIP installed into your stock open diff.
That is your only choice. I've done enough research to know.
visit www.eastcoastoffroad.com and call over there and ask for Darrin, tell him Tom from Boca sent you and ask him about the POWERTRAX NO-SLIP. That is his biggest seller and ALL they use in there personal off road vehicles.
If you buy anything else, your throwing your money down the toilet.
Trust me on this one, I know lockers and l/s's like I invented them myself.

The powetrax is NOT expensive. 275 for the lock right and 375 for the NO-Slip. The nice thing is that you can install them yourself inside your open diff. This will save you 300 bucks on install. So, in essence, the powertrax is FREE when you compare it to a less expensive model that comes in its own carrier.
Detroit locker is my choice and runs for 575.00 plus 300 bucks install because it come in its own carrier and cannot be self installed. However, if I did have my stock carrier in my rear, I would no doubt toss the NO-SLIP in.

Garrett PS, Tom check out this thread! Actually, I think its been deleted...but I remember someone telling me that I needed to get an auburn instead of a powertrax!! LoL
Eaton makes alot of different ones, which one did you get?
I think this is the one you got, same as the Auburn except 2 things. 1) the Eaton is rebuildable. 2) The clutch plates are Carbon fiber.
2 bad things I forgot to mention about limited slips. 1) they don't work in reverse. 2) If one wheel comes off the ground, you will stop dead and that wheel will sit and spin forever. An L/S NEEDS resistance to work.
Is this the one you got??? http://www.reiderracing.com/eatonposi.htm

You'll need to take out the rind and pinion gears and re-align them. This is a precision job that requires special tools and lots of experience. If not done correctly, you'll need a whole new axle. So this will cost you at least 250.00- 350.00 to install.

a locker or L/S will result in slight loss of RWHP. Known fact. Your engine horsepower is now being distributed amongst 2 wheels instead of one, therefore more loss in horsepower as it's transfered throught the powertrain from the crank. Trade off is more stick when you need it most, better launches also will make up the HP loss.

BTW, what quote were you talking about? The price?
I should have my Detroit Locker by then too.
Compare the ratings on the upper right hand side of the page.
Look at the poor rating on my Auburn, then click the other link and look at the rating on the Powertrax No-Slip, it has one of the best ratings out of all of them.
Auburn = http://www.reiderracing.com/auburngear.htm
Power Trax = http://www.reiderracing.com/noslip.htm
Detroit Locker = http://www.reiderracing.com/detroitlocker.htm
Of course the Detroit kicks butt accross the field, but it's expensive.
All lockers aren't the greatest for towing because they'll chew tires a bit while pulling a very heavy load. That's why all the lockers have low tow ratings.
