I am looking at a 1988 ford diesel, i assume that they were 6.9 with no turbo right? what problem did these engines have that year? how was power back then? any other comments? thanks
I Beleve that in 88 Ford was using the 7.3L not the 6.9. The 7.3 had a cavitation problem. do a search for that for details on the subject. If i remember correctly the 6.9L was used from 83 untill 86 or 87 when it was replaced with the 7.3L
my Dad has a 6.9L Desile Navistar in his 87 F250, non turbo. 360 000 km and still runing the orig. injectors. Runs great, has required absolutly no internal work. He runs a K&N air filter and a slightly larger than stock exhaust system. I think Hp is about 189, torque is about 380ftlb. I am not sure though. With a 4 speed manual transmission and 3.50 gears out back she pulls great. Drop her into 4 low and you can pull a house down.

I know that your dad's 6.9L has 150hp and 350lb-ft of tourque unless he was to put a turbo on it. It would not have 190hp or 380lb-ft of tourque. Thats around what the 7.3L has 185 for hp and 400lb-ft of touque . The exhuaust system doesnt boost the hp and tourque up 30+.
From the book. 1987 6.9 has 170hp@3300rpm,315tq@1400rpm.
1988 7.3 has 180@3300rpm,345tq@1400rpm.
When the stock turbo came out in late 1993 it was rated at 190hp@3000rpm,395tq@1400rpm.The powerstroke came in 1994 with 210hp@3000rpm,425tq@2000rpm.
My mistake on the hp/torque- like I said I wasnt sure. The 189 I typed was supposed to be 180, granted I was still high. I think I made the mistake of swapping the turbo numbers I heard a long time ago. Thanks for the corrections. Regardless the 87 6.9 is a very reliable engine at least if you do the regular maitinance like everything else.

HOw about the 89 7.3?? How reliable it that one. WAS the 89 250 4x4 a good rig all the way around?? I need help fast got a deal that migh runnout on me!!
wycowboy, With proper maintence it is a great motor and truck. They will easy go over 250,000 miles on the engine.
The most important thing that is bad is do not use regular Prestone antifreeze.
The 7.3 needs a heavy duty low silicate antifreeze and a suplimental coolant addative to control corrosion in the block. (cavitation)
What cavitation is are little pinholes eaten through the cylinder walls. What causes this is the vibration of the cylinder wall from fuel detonation causes little bubbles to form on the coolant side of the cylinder wall. Without the coolant supplement the wall starts to corroded (rust) where the little bubbles are. Once a depression is formed the little bubbles will keep forming in the same place. In a short amount of time they eat clear through the wall. A very costly rebuild with the cylinders sleeved is the only way to fix the holes.
