Snapped exhaust bolts.

This can't be new to anyone that has worked on exhaust manifolds, but I'm really struggling here (and hope its acceptable to post it in this forum).

Anyway, tore down the 460 for my 93 F350 crewcab, got the heads off, however on head has two exhaust manifold studs hanging out that snapped at the manifold, so about an inch is hanging out. On the other head, three studs snapped right at the heads.

so the ones hanging out, I sprayed with penetrating oil, and let sit over night, tapped them with a hammer, and used a stud extractor tool with my breaker bar, and slowly turned them. Or tried to. Snap, snap.

The other head I heated with my oxy torch, after drilling a 5/16" hole in the center of the recessed studs, then tried to use a screw extractor to get them out. No dice. On the second stud I now have a stuck screw extractor

I hate to sound like a brain-dead idiot, but what should I do here? Or am I stuck finding someone with an EDM machine and spending the dollars for such services? If thats the case, I might as well buy a pair of heads on e-bay.

These are 89 460 EFI heads, if that matters from a material standpoint.

Thanks in advance,

Frederic

From: Where ever my boots come off.
Just drill them out and then tap the hole usta little oversized, go up to the first metric size unless they are alrady metric then move up to the first SAE size. hope that helps.

yea, drill em as striaght as yo can, then retap em, worst case you screw them up and you have to buy new ones any how. but then you can get some really nice worked ones and make some more power. good luck, take your time.

This is a big problem with these heads. Not to mention spark plugs. The'll break off just as easilly. If it looks bad, I just burn all the heads off,and heat the crap out of the head until they back out.

Thank you guys for your advice... I have been heating the head with my oxy/acl torch, then trying to back out the snapped studs, but I haven't been heating it to the point where it changes color, because I was afraid of warping the head.

These are low-mileage heads in excellent condition (65K) with a few snapped exhaust bolts.

I found out from the local Ford dealer (I was there for another reason, and just mentioned the snapped bolts tongue in cheek) and the guy said that they all do this because the studs have a slight triangle shape to them, and designed not to back out.

Always fun, I guess.

I really want *these* heads because they are efi heads, match my intake, and I intended to do some DIY port matching! But we'll see what happens.

thanks for the advice guys!
