recently my check engine light came on, and after checking with the code reader it said that o2 sensor malfunction bank 2 sensor 2 so i changed it and reset check engine light. about one week later the light came back on and the same code came up whats up with this i'm stumped? 1997 triton v-8 expedition with 120,000 runs like still new HELP
What is the actual code. Bank 2 sensor 2 is the rear O2 monitor on the drivers side. I need an actual code to try to help you out. Which sensor did you change.
thank you for your reply! the actual code was "PO161" and it read the 02 sensor heater circuit malfunction bank 2 sensor 2 I hope this will be of some help. your comments and suggestions are greatly appreciated, I will look forward to hearing back from you. the sensor changed was rear drivers side.
You have the right sensor, 4 wires are on the sensor. power in for heater is Tan w/yellow stripe. Out or ground is Red. Check resistance and should be 6 ohm's at approx. 68 deg. Check the connecter back to the computer on these wires for voltage with engine running. No power and wire is probably damaged or broken. Also check new sensor with ohm meter, it can be bad too. Let us know and good luck.
I checked today and there is a service bulletin for that code. It actually says to replace the sensor or sensors, but it is talking about the front sensors not the monitors, and reprogram PCM to latest level calibration. I think I would just get your local dealer to check and see if yours needs the PCM update. The PCED (diag manual) says it is a short to ground in the heater circuit of the sensor. The bulletin says.
This may be caused by the heated exhaust gas oxygen (HEGO) monitor calibration not allowing enough time for proper monitoring.
Ask about TSB 97-26-19
*NOTE this is not a gaurantee, that this is what is wrong with your vehicle. You could have shorted wires somewhere or a PCM concern.
Also ask about TSB 97-26-17 The A/C drain would drip onto the passenger side O2 and cause problems. It is a pain in the rear to install the diverter for this TSB. @$$#&$@##$$$$$$
Does this TSB apply to a 2000 f150 5.4? I have one that ran that same p161 code at the zone. The jojos there told me that bank 2 sensor 2 was the 2nd o2 sensor on the passengers side....so I spent 50 bucks and replaced that one. Had the code reset and drove home. Next time I drove the truck after 7-10 minutes the check engine light came back on took it back to the zone and it read the same thing....i asked what was up since i just replaced the pass side sensor...they said get online.....lol if i had only had the time before I left town this weekend to get online...
mac 'if it weren't my nice truck there would be black tape over the service engine soon light' gyvr
well in all honesty, I finally corrected the problem by changing the drivers side rear o2 sensor the clown that replaced the first sensor changed the wrong one the first time he thought right side was the passenger side till I showed him the reply from TROLL 45 he seems to know his stuff, and to him i owe a special thank you, he saved me not only money but alot of frustration as well. thank you and good luck!

Bank 1 sensor 1 passenger front. O2 sensor
Bank 1 sensor 2 passenger rear. O2 monitor
Bank 2 sensor 1 driver front. O2 sensor
Bank 2 sensor 2 driver rear. O2 monitor
Sensor tells computer how to fuel engine, rich or lean.
Monitor tells computer whether the system is doing its job, or whether the converter is doing its job.
thanks guys, and i'll be sure to inform autozone the next time i'm in there....maybe soon if the old one i took out doesn't work when i put it on the drivers side.......
